well i have been wanting to have a marklin train to add to my model collection but have never really known what to get.
space is really at a premium and whilst i would love to have a 7 or 8 car ice1 or 3 - it just isnt going to happen due to a combination of cost and space that i dont have!.
so i saw on german ebay the white marriage train of 1997, item 28970 with a white glasskasten and 2 white coaches plus a horse and carriage all in a nice presentation box.
i won it so am thrilled to be waiting on its arrival.
are these analogue or digital locos - i know they are tiny but i just wondered as i think i saw an article talking about the delta system and referring to this set.
my 1st marklin! i cant wait - this is my christmas present to myself!

thankyou tulit, i had no idea that this loco would have a decoder in it! this just gets better!  oddly enough iv had the central station for a few years now and use it for my n gauge layout, so perhaps above that ill build a shelf with a mountain at one end and a small terminus station at the other just for this little glasskasten to run along!. do all marklin locos from a certain year onwards have a decoder fitted? ( fleischmann and minitrix have some dcc ready - for the customer to fit a decoder and others - usually the very small locos have them already fitted )

Not sure what year the hard cutoff was. There was a period of time for sure that both digital and analog locos were sold. Anything you buy new today will be digital (no analog only produced anymore), but most digital locos can be run fine on analog layouts (with the proper/newer transformers).
Delta existed for a period in there too and was sort of a halfway between analog and digital operation (cheaper than digital). It wasn't very good.
Today the protocol of digital has a newer version as well called mfx. this has some additional features beyond MM such as auto loco registration. Most of the mfx decoders support DCC as well (in addition to MM and pure analog).

DCC and mfx in one decoder came in the recent years (ESU V4 M4, Märklin mLD, mSD). No Märklin H0 loco supports DCC ex works. Delta is limited - but the early 6080 decoders weren't much better (only 1 function, no acceleration/braking delay, maximum speed not adjustable). |

Delta is the same as the original Marklin digital, except that early Delta decoders were restricted in the number of addresses they could be set to, and the lights were not connected to function F0, but would come on when the loco started to move. Later Delta decoders were identical in function to the early digital decoders.
I have many Delta locos that I have not converted to later versions of digital and I run them quite happily with my MS2 alongside other locos with the latest decoders. |

Marklin have made digital locomotives since 1984. As others have stated, the decoders have evolved over time. In 1984 Marklin had a 4 digit part numbering scheme, sometime later (I believe 1995ish) 5 digit part numbers were introduced. Today all part numbers are 5 digit. If a locomotive is untouched (not converted), generally the four digit numbers are as follows: 30xx/31xx/35xx - Analog 33xx - Early models are analog, some later are Delta 34xx - Delta 36xx - Digital There is a similar breakdown with the 5 digit part numbers, but there are more exceptions. Perhaps another member who is more knowledgeable will comment. You may also look at this thread, which breaks down how to decode locomotive serial numbers from 1992-present. thankyou all for your kind comments and also Brandon for such a thorough explanation. - to be honest i can hardly understand it all - however for me i dont think ( or maybe just hoping hehe ) that it wont matter too much as i wont be buying lots - just a few items i like ( or is that how this all starts and just gets worse? ).
ill just hope to have a few trains in my collection and occasionally ill take them out the boxes for a run. im humming and hawing about building a shelf layout above my n gauge layout where with a station at one end with perhaps 2 platforms and tracks with a single track leading to a tunnel at the other end which will conceal perhaps 3 or if i can squeeze in, width permitting, 4 tracks. 1 train goes into tunnel and a different one comes out kinda idea. using the marklin central station.
just an idea so at least i can see my trains moving.
thanks once again everyone - im learning slowly about all this and i must admit it is fascinating.

Hi db ice 3, Your "Wedding Train" 28970 is a Delta "Set" With Train Sets, 28xxx means Delta, and 26XXX means it has a Digital decoder in the Loco  |
