Hi Märklin friends! Smile

This is a question primarily to you who have experience using Märklin Central Station 2 with Rocrail software.

Last year I did some trials using Rocrail software and CS2.
All went fine and I think I got a good idea of how to set things up except for ONE thing:

I just couldn't get the loco speed parameters set up correctly.
The result was that the speed of the locos seemed to be somewhat random over different routes, also different dependent of loco used.
Yeah.. I know.. I probably was mixing it all up.. Bored

LOCO CV-settings:
Max speed

In Rocrail the following parameters can be set to control the speed of the LOCO:
V_min / V_Rmin¹
V_mid / V_Rmid¹
V_cru / V_Rcru¹
V_max / V_Rmax¹

In Rocrail you can define the following speed controls passing a SENSOR:
enter The train enters the block. Velocity is set to V_mid in case no free destination is found or in case the train should wait.
shortin In combination with the loco property “Use shortin event” this will be used as in.
pre2in Reduce the train velocity to V_min in case no free destination is found or in case the train should wait.
in If the train has to stop the velocity is set to zero. This event also frees up the previous block locked by this train.

QUESTION:

- How did you (in which order and how) did you setup loco CV decoders, CS2 and Rocrail to control parameters?

Hello,

Well, quite a lot of aspects, some of them being interrelated.

I'm going to try to clarify this a bit, even if I'm not a long time user of Rocrail (only 1 year 1/2)...For more complex questions, try Rocrail forum.

1) Even if you can manage CV with Rocrail, I don't think it's a good idea, because of mixing things. Decoder CV's depends on decoder type (for instance mfx decoders don't share the same CV's as of dcc decoders, even if some are common). So I suggest you to manage max speed, acceleration and deceleration rate with the adequate tool (CS2, or LokProgrammer for ESU decoders, or others).
So now let's say you have adjusted the CV values for 2 different locos, loco A and loco B with your CS2, for use in "manual" mode (i.e. using the knobs of the CS2).

2) When you say "you can define the following speed controls passing a SENSOR", it's correct BUT the various speed VMax,VMin, VMid, VCru ONLY apply when the sensors are linked to a block, AND some blocks are linked thru routes, AND you're using the automatic mode. If you're in manual mode under Rocrail, none of the Vxxx will be used.

3) Now, how to assign values to each loco registered under Rocrail:
Here are two pics:

The loco A is BR212. I've set the Vmin equals to 23% of max speed, VMid to 55% of max speed, and VMax to 100% of max speed. (VCru not used). 100% means when the speed vertical bar of the loco on the CS2 = 100; 23% means when vertical bar = 23...and so on. I don't have at hand the CV values, so I can't post them.

The loco B is BR194. I've set the Vmin equals to 10% of max speed, VMid to 45% of max spped, and VMax to 100% of max speed. (VCru not used)

All the values I have set, for these 2 locos only, correspond approximately to the same real speed on the layout. Each loco must be set with its own set of values.

So to summarize:
-set the CV values for each loco to run in manual mode (without the use of any train control software). Adjust mainly the CV related to Max speed, acceleration rate & deceleration rate. Use the CS2 or any devices allowing such settings.
-create you locos under rocrail; set the Vmax, Vmin, etc... values in percentage of max speed
-setup all the blocks, sensors, routes under rocrail
-run in automatic mode
...have fun !

I've also posted detailed explanations about setting up speed blocks and routes here: https://www.marklin-user...lling-Lissy-sensors.aspx
You may also find useful explanations...

Hi Fabrice,

Thank you very much for the explanation and screen dump of your LOCO setup menus! ThumpUp
Glad to hear that you have got it all to work and also very good to know in which order you set the parameters up.

I will definitely read through your thread about speed blocks and routes before I start that work on my new layout. I've made some rough planning of how I want it to work, but it is always a balance between functionality and cost. Your system seems VERY extensive from what I read so far. I'm on a tighter budget both in terms of $$$ and room space.

I think the main problem I got last year was because I ripped most of the cables and sensors out of my old layout and replaced it with new "prototype" stuff and introduced the Rocrail software at the same time. Simply too many sources of errors and problems, so it made it very hard to tell what was really failing. Confused

Now I'm starting fresh in January building a completely new layout, my 6th permanent layout, so then it will be easier to get all things right from start. Smile
