Hi all,

Please help me solve this problem.

I've got a beautifull Roco BR 602. I installed an ESU Loksound 3.5 decoder in it to complete her. This setup functioned very well, until last monday.

The train goes forward, backward, accelerates and brakes but, which make me think that the decoder herself is OK, the sound has gone. All other funtions work (lights, shunting mode).

I took the hood off, but I couldn't see anything special. All wires where there and connected accept for an orange one which was not connected in the first place. The speaker still has its two brown wires attached. It shurely puzzles me!

I allready did a reset, with no resolve.

What could be wrong?

Rinus

Do you have a Lokprogrammer? It has a test function that could be used to test individual functions.
It is possible that there is a loose wire between the speaker and the decoder or a problem on the decoder circuit board.
The ESU manual (either included with the decoder or online) should explain which wire is for what.
Check with your dealer (where you bought the decoder) if they have a Lokprogrammer and can test your unit.
If not, perhaps a fellow modeller or other hobby shop near you has a programmer.
Does the CS2 or ECOS also have a test option?

Hi Mike,

Unfortonately I've got np Lokprogrammer, nor CS2 or Ecos.

strange thing is, I did not touch any of the wires before it stoped functioning.

Hello Rinus
Looks like a speaker failure to me.
Some of the earlier designs were quite fragile, they were fairly high impednace meaning the wires around the coil are probably fairly thin and rather long;

I would unsolder one of the speaker's wirs, then measure the resistance with an ohmeter.
If you measure infinite or several megohms, you know what's going on!
If you have a replacement speaker of the same impedance, you can also try swapping it..
Good luck, keep us posted.

I don't know what the orange wire is for, but if it was live and contacted against a contact or other wire, it could have caused some damage. I always either remove or insulate wires that are not used to make sure that there is no risk. I have a few decoders (with wires) where I have had to do this, but all of the recent ones with 8pin or 21pin sockets have usually been straightforward as the loks have been wired to accept them with no wiring required. This includes the Loksound decoders that I installed in my Roco Re 6/6 and Re 460 models.

Hello Rinus

AFAIK the orange wire is one of the motors' connections....(that's the DCC spec..)

Did you check the value of the CV adjusting the volume (CV63)?
Is the general sound function key switched on?

Otherwise, looks like a speaker failure to me.

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that I'm sending the decoder back to ESU.

I changed the wires to the speaker and after that dd not worked out either, I changed the speaker itself. But to no good. Finally I checked the CV's.

I hope ESU can fix it. I'll let you know.

Dear friends,

I have a confession to make: the sound decoder wasn't broken. I only forgot to set my Intellibox to "motorola new" instead of "motorola old". Therefore the f1 function could not be activated. Blushing Blushing Blushing Blushing.

I had been programming a MFX decoder prior to the "sound decoder problem"and must have altered the settings.

Thans for your kind help anyway.

Regards,

Rinus
