Hello all,

I have recently seen and purchased a wagon I was unfamiliar with, a 4526 oil car I found on ebay. This appears to be just like the hard to come by and pricey "MYCKET ELDFARLIGT" ESSO wagons (4524) many of you are likely familiar with except it has a CALTEX sticker instead of ESSO. From what I can determine, this one was only released to Scandinavia, at least according to this ebay post of an identical car for sale currently. Link here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/...trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 It appears to be a rare find, at least here in the US. I noticed one sold for 280euro on liveauctioneers, but I have never seen a Märklin freight wagon sell for that much anywhere and am frankly puzzled by that price. My real question is how many similar items has Märklin released (in the 50's/60's)? I have only ever seen English/German Märklin catalogs and can find no reference to this model anywhere. I assume that it would only appear in the Swedish catalogs? If this is the case, how many other models are there like this for other countries as well? Maybe the question ought to be how many different catalogs did Märklin put out in the 50's/60's? My main area of collecting currently is country specific freight cars (not as a result of this find), so this is particularly intriguing to me. Any and all assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Selim

Hi Selim,

The cars were not contained in the Swedish catalogue. They were advertised on a special leaflet which was inserted in the catalogue but not stitched in.

Unfortunately today+80% of all cars offered are faked. It is to easy to reproduce these stickers. If you are looking for genuine cars you should look at tradera.se .

The only other offer of this kind are the pages which were published in Austria advertising the 3033 / 3233 special sets (simplified RSM 800) and the brown transformer.

A quick gooling reveals:

4524 Esso
4525 AB Kol och Koks Eldningsolja
4526 Caltex
4527 Koppartrans
4528 SSA (Svenska Sockeraktiebolaget) Melass - Sockerbolaget

They were also available as construction sets 492x, depending on marking.

Some pictures can be found on this auction site in Sweden: See this link

By the way "mycket eldfarligt" means "highly flammable".

Well at least I got my info, thanks for that guys. I was worried about a fake, and it is certainly possible this could be one, especially since it came without the box. Not that it really matters now, but any ideas on how I might identify it as such? Any dead giveaways I could look for? I had always wondered what MYCKET ELDFARLIGT meant, thanks for that. I did run across some repro stickers on ebay.de last night while waiting for responses to come in, further adding to my worry over being faked. These Märklin items are clearly more easy to find in Europe/Scandinavia, but this is literally the first time I have seen this wagon in the US, leading to my high level of excitement over it.

Thanks,
Regards,
Selim

Hi,

For a reasonable summary of Marklin production for Scandinavia, try looking at the Scanditrain web-site. It is not totally comprehensive but most recent production is covered.

Hi Miles,

On the aged stickers of the original cars the transparent areas are honey-yellow and not really clear. Also the white areas got a yellow touch (e.g. the letters of the number-plate). If you own an original 4524 (which were more common) you can easily recognise the difference also on Ebay pictures. The pictures of the auction linked above give also a good impression how original cars look like.

Regards

Markus

Hmm... Maybe I should sell my old 4525 Kol & Koks ???

No box, and in played condition... BigGrin

My Caltex one was "converted" to SSA with the logo cut out from my dad's letter papers with the right size of the SSA sign as the company logo...

Didn't know better back then, but it gave me a lot of playing value as a kid since I saw the real SSA wagons almost daily by the sugar factory in the 60's...

Thanks Markus for the info on the wagon. I think it is the genuine article, but like I said, it does not really matter at this point. I was excited to see the scanditrain website that Bob recommended. Just what the doctor ordered! Are there any other similar sites which do the same for the other countries that Märklin models? I am most interested in the SNCF, SNCB, DSB, OBB and FS. Swiss too. Juhan, if you did want to sell your 4525, I am your man.

Thanks in advance everyone.
