Yes, recently Haydarpasa Station has had a fire....but fortunately it was not a big one....only some part of the roof was burnt....

About the food you are most welcome anytime.....but Borek never goes with Kebab.....

That is good news to here that the damage did not do too much damage, as with all great buildings, it would have been better if the fire did not happen at all.

As for the Borek I fear you are right, but recently at by favourate Turkish restaurant in London I enjoyed Borek starter, followed by Kofta kebab. What can I say I am a heathen...........

Coming from a country that wasn't linked to the European railway network, other than by ferries, before the Øresundsbron was opened in 2000, I've found your photos and videos very interesting.

One thing which struck me is the fact that the ferry docks directly to a quay without a landing bridge. This tells me that the water level must be very constant in the Bosporus.

An example of a landing bridge is shown here (photos shown on a Swedish railway forum):





The design of the landing bridge is such that it can compensate for varying water levels. The photos show a bridge at Trelleborg F, an old railway ferry harbour having been in use for train ferries since 1909 to Sassnitz in Germany and today also to Rostock in Germany, having crossings of 4h00 to Sassnitz and 6h15 to Rostock across the southern Baltic. In the Baltic the tide is normally not noticeable. The water levels in the Baltic may however easily differ about a metre if for instance strong winds coming from north to north-north-west push water through the Danish Baelts and Sounds. This type of weather may occur quite often with low pressure systems passing from the British Isles, the North Sea and the Scandinavian Peninsula. When such a weather system has left the Swedish east coast, moving either towards Finland, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania, the low pressure itself causes the sea level to rise and the winds on "the back side" of the weather system pushes water through the Danish Baelts and Sounds.

On this map the low pressure system will move north from the Copenhagen area in Denmark over Sweden and not east over the Baltic, thus meaning the winds behind the weather system will not be suitable to push water down the Danish Baelts and Sounds.

If you look closely you may see that there are two sets of turnouts and they are located on the second part of the bridge. The ferries have five tracks and looking from the shore side, the first set is used for going to tracks 1, 3 or 5 and the second set for going to tracks 2, 3 or 4.

The bridge is resting on supports being large bearings by the shore and then are more bearing at the smaller arch, meaning that the bridge can be adjusted in order to not have too sharp horizontal curves, where passenger coaches or long freight wagons otherwise may risk hitting the ground or the bridge. In other words there are three points where there can be sharper horizontal bends to the track (and short gaps), at the land side, at the middle of the bridge and at the connexion between the bridge and the ferry. If you take a look at the video that I have put a link to in my posting "Berlin Night Express", then you can clearly hear the "clonks" when the coach goes over these points and you even see there is a bump when entering the ferry.
