Hello all,
I have just purchased a Brawa loco (which runs fine) containing an ESU Lokpilot of an old generation (probably a LokPilotV3 - 52614).
I'm wondering if: a) When using a Lokprogrammer, I may upgrade to a V3.5 version (only software upgrade) b) Does this upgrade will stay to V3.5, I mean is it possible to upgrade by software only to V4 ? c) Is a Lokpilot V4 21MTC pin to pin compatible with a LokpilotV3 21MTC ?
TIA Fabrice

Hi, Fabrice!
a) There never was a LokPilot 3.5, so you cannot upgrade (there only was a LokSound 3.5 and LokSound 3.0 can be upgraded to 3.5); you can upgrade v3.0 to the latest firmware. b) AFAIK v3.x cannot be upgraded to version 4.0. c) Yes. ESU decoders and Märklin "Spezial" decoders are pin compatible, other current Märklin decoders are not pin compatible. |

And consider that when using LokProgrammer you need 2 versions of PC SW: one for decoder up to V3.xx (LokProgrammer V2) and a different one for V4.xx decoders (namely LokProgrammer 4). All decoder of any brand with NEM pin-out are interchangeable.

That's the reason why new mLD with 21mtc cannot be used in "old" Märklin locos with 21mtc (2004 through 2008). 21mtc is NEM 660. |

So what ... The Morop needs only to change the NEM recommandations !..*** Anyway , certification institutes do not invent anything and rely on standards provided by manufacturers ! those NEM recommandations were based upon Marklin specifications . At this time they had a subcontractor named ESU, but the first models in the world to be equipped with the 21pin mtc were from Marklin.... .... *** or they can edit NEM recommandations N°2 & everything will be OK .

Good, if the manufacturer has a clear and simple system. The 21mtc interface of "old" Märklin locos complies with NEM 660. The 21mtc interface of "new" Märklin locos complies with NMRA specifications. Märklin ignore NEM specifications by following NMRA specifications. They also ignore NMRA recommendations because 21mtc should not be used for newly developed locomotives (as of January 1, 2010). Märklin is the original - they only comply with their house standards - and those are subject to change without further notice and with every new model. |
