Hello All, I really need some help. A while ago I obtained two ESU decoder upgrade sets, ESU 54630 and ESU 54631. Both contain a ESU 54610 Lokpilot V4.0 decoder. and the appropriate permanent magnet. I installed on set in a new (never run) Marklin 3021 V200 and the other in a used , but clean and serviced Marklin 3078 Henschel. Before I installed the decoders I test ran both Loks in analogue mode, with absolutely no hiccups. The installation of the decoder and perm magnet went smoothly with no hassles. To control the loks I have a Marklin 60653 Mobile Station (MS2) First test run with the V200 was disappointing. The lok pulsed especially at low speed. At higher speed the lok runs ok but there does not seem to be much control over it with the MS2. When running the lok at maximum speed and then turning the speed dial on the MS2 to 0 , nothing happens for the first 3 metres (!!!!), the lok then slows in the next meter and stops. So from maximum speed to stop takes about 4 metres. As per ESU installation manual I attempted to set the appropriate CV parameters with my MS2. I believe that this does not work because the MS2 returns a "Time Out" message. While the lights flash on the V200 when I attempt a CV change indicating an update of values, but it does not seem to make any difference when running the lok. Furthermore I could not change the address of the V200 with the MS2 but managed to do it with my old 6021. With regard to the lokpilot installed in the Henschel, the running characteristics are just as bad as with the V200, and attempts to alter CV parameters did not seem to work either. The lights on the Henschel do not even flash. I do not believe that the MS2 is faulty because my loks with Marklin decoders work fine. While the ESU Installation Manual gives broad directions in programming with the MS1, has anyone successfully programmed Lokpilots with an MS2?? I would appreciate any help and advice in this task. many thanks Bob. |

Hi! Did you configure the locos using DCC?
LokPilot V4 can automatically detect motor parameters. IIRC you have to set CV 53 or 54 to zero, then activate F1. Loco will run high-speed for about one meter, then parameters are set. Worked fine for me (but I only tried it in one loco).
There is a special CV to configure slow-speed behaviour (will not be set automatically). |

I also have problems programming ESU decoders with MS2. For example I have to try several times just to alter the address or the Vmax and Vmin values. I know when the procedure completes successfully by the watching the blinking of the front/rear lights. Furthermore I cannot change any CV (I get the time out message). Does anyboby knows what is going on. My MS2 firmware version is 1.5

My MS2 has firmware 1.81 and I have no problems programming ESU decoders using DCC (CVs can be read and written). I never tried that with MM protocol (and when the lights are flashing, then probably MM protocol is used). |

Hi Tom and Anthpao, Thanks for responding to my problem. To answer questions, my MS2 is Software version 1.1 and hardware version 2.0. I believe that I am programming in MM protocol because when I initially entered new loco I selected "MM2 Programmable". (I thought, maybe mistakenly, that DCC is only used for 2rail DC stuff) When I try to alter CV values by entering "Program Loco" menu I always get the time out message with the ESU lokpilot. the only decoders which seem to accept CV values are the Marklin decoders.
Trying to change Vmax, Vmin, Acc , Dec, also appears not to work, I have tried both "0" and "63" in Dec with no difference in stopping performance. Similarly entering Values of "0" and "63" in CV4 makes no difference.
Another interesting thing is that when attempting changes, the lights flash once in the Henschel but twice on the V200, and both decoders should be the same.
Tom, how do I get the MS2 to read back the values in the CV registers?
It almost seems to me that one needs to buy the ESU lokprommer to get the decoders to work.
Many thanks Bob (none the wiser as yet)

Ok maybe you can not read the cv values in MM mode but why I cannot write them. I have no problems with MS1. But even if I try to change the Vmax or Vmin from the menu and not from the cv's the decoder does not accept the values. Only if I try several times I can get the decoder programmed successfully.

G'day all . Today I received some valuable information from NZ that the MS2 needs to be in DCC mode to be able to write and read CV values to the ESU lokpilot. I tried it this afternoon and I had success in writing and reading CV values. The loks run reasonably well now, but they still need some more fine tuning.
I first deleted the loco from the MS2 and then started again with the registering process, ie after I put the loco on the track I selected DCC and then entered the address and name. That got the lok to run. After that I changed the CV values.
The ESU Lokpilot Installation Manual which I downloaded from the ESU USA site gives all sorts of information, but unfortunately it lacks some key information namely that the MS2 needs to be in DCC mode. Another point lacking in the manual is any discussion about the placement in the circuit of the 2 inductors which come in the the ESU upgrade sets. I wired them in line with the 2 wires (grey and Orange) from the lokpilot to the brush terminals on the motor.
IF anyone has some other good information on ESU lokpilot decoders operated with MS2s then please continue the thread Bob.

G'day ac jacko, well as I wrote in my last post the loks are going better than they were originally, ie before I altered some of the CV values, but I am not completely happy, in fact I would go as far as saying that they worked better in analogue mode before I installed the ESU lokpilot. There does not seem to be a smooth correlation between the speed dial setting. to me it seems that there is a 1-2 sec delay before the loks begin to respond to the MS2 speed dial setting. Bob. |

Bob, As quoted in my email, the two bits with your conversion set are chockes and you are right they belong to each side of the motor connections. although your capacitor in the middle has to stay but any other capacitor has to go.

There is a special CV to configure slow-speed behaviour (will not be set automatically). And this works aswell with a MS2 ? What I've noticed, programming lokpilots 4 with the lokprogrammer and running them via an ECoS is fine, run it on a MS1 and the loco lost its smooth running at startup. John |

Hi all, Just to confirm, with my MS2 and the lokpilot4.0 the start up of the loco is also jerky, first it groans then springs into action and then settles down to the slow speed set, by the MS2. Naturally the effect is worst when the speed setting is set to very slow. Unfortunately I do not have a ECoS to compare.
