Broke my MS1 trying to extend the cable, need some help - It has now been fixed - and extended

I have a MS1 and an ECOS. I had the MS1 connected to the ECOS with the small marklin adapter cable (10 pin to seven pin plugs). I wanted to extend the length of the MS1 cable so I bought 60126 (dealer said it would work). It arrived today, looked at the plugs saw that they didn't match. Checked this site, and read about someone still using the 60126 with the MS1, so I tried it and I broke off a pin and it now doesn't want to work. So now I would like to splice everything together. Does anyone know what wires need to be connected together if I hardwire the MS1 cable directly to the back of the 7 pin plug on the small adapter cable. If I can figure out what wires to connect I will do the following. 1) Cut both plugs off of the 60126 cable. 2) Hard wire one end of the 60126 cable to the exposed wires of the MS1 (out of frustration and curiousity I already cut the plug off) 3) Hard wire the other end of the 60126 to the adapter cable (I have already cut the 10 pin plug of the adapter cable off) 4) Once everything is wired together I will plug the remaining seven pin plug of the adapter cable to one of the three outlets on the ECOS as it was before and run my trains with an extended cable on my MS1. Ok so what is the question, you cut the wires or the plugs, you've bought the adapter cable but it is to short. Why did you buy the adapter cable in the first place when you wanted a longer cable ? Could you also loose data if the cable is too long ?
Why not log into the ESU forum and ask the question if there is a cable available to extend the MS1 as you've mentioned and your intentions.

John John: Let me try again, I might have been a bit confusing in my first post. As of this morning I had my MS1 plugged into my ECOS via the Marklin Adapter cable and everything was working fine. Today, in the mail, I received a Marklin extension cable, item 60126. The purpose for that cable was to extend the MS1's reach around my layout by about 2 meters (the length of the extension cable). My dealer had said this would work, obviously a mistake. After looking at the cable I noticed a problem (all related to Marklin and not ESU). The plugs on the extension cable (60126) didn't match up with any of the Marklin plugs on either the adapter cable or MS1. So I came on to this forum and saw a post in the past about a member simply plugging the ten pin plug of the MS1 into the 9 hole plug of the extension cable and everything worked just fine. So I tried that. In the process I broke a pin off of the 10 pin MS1 plug. This was a key pin as the MS1 now does not work even when set up prior to the arrival of the extension cable. So after doing further internet research and looking on this forum I am of the opinion I could simply hard wire the MS1 directly to the extension cable and from there hard wire the extension cable to the adapter cable. The adapter cable would then plug into the ECOS as it did this morning when everything was working fine prior to me breaking the pin. Based on what I think I know, the MS1 when plugged into the ECOS is a slave. And as such I only need to worry about 4 wires on the MS1, the red, brown, yellow and purple (I found a post that spells out what each of these wires do and how they relate to the seven pin plug itself on the adapter cable. What I have no idea about is which color wires on the adapter cable match up the specific pins on the seven pin plug. The adapter cable contains six wires, blue, green, white, red, brown and one uninsulated wire. I think if I can figure out which wire goes to which pin I can then wire the four wires from the MS1 to the adapter cable plug. Of course all of this wouldn't be necessary if I hadn't broken my pin on the MS1 plug. I would have just plugged the MS1 into the 10 pin plug on the adapter cable, cut the cable in half, spliced in 6 ft of extension cable and then plugged the 7 pin plug of the adapter cable back into my ECOS. So I hope this makes it clearer about what I need and why. Chris

Hi Chris, There is a wiring diagram in the latest Marklin Digital News issue 1-12, I was trying to copy and paste it for you but it won't play ball for me. Any of your closer buddies subscribe ?? It tells how to use a cable & plug, off an MS1 to repair an MS2 with a broken plug, with a wiring diagram, they are different. The MS2 uses less wires At the risk of breaching copywrite I'll purservere with it and post if I can. You can also call Dr Tom Catherall if your a Digital Club member ! Meantime good luck |

Chris,
The picture is much clearer now but I have no idea how to fix it as you said which wire goes where. I'm sure someone will be able to help you.
good luck

Hi Chris, Try www.toottoot.co.nz and click on the download section under other in the left hand column. Under "Marklin Related Downloads" there is a pinout diagram of the adapter cable that may be of some use to you. I couldn't give you a direct link to it unfortunately but there is a list of downloads that may be of some help. Kind Regards, Daniell

Any 4-pole cable should do, so no need to damage the 60126 for that purpose. |

Eureka I hope I've got it to copy and paste here. Somehow can't got the pin out digramme to copy but I'll keep trying. I'll post this now and work on the Pin out diagram Hope this helps Chris Copy write owned by Marklin and or Tom Catherall, I think Fixing Mobile Station 2 Cables Some operators of the MS2 have broken the pins on the plug and have asked about fixing or replacing it. A replacement can be done with part number E146781. I have done a replacement by using a cable cut off a broken MS1 which has the same 10 pin DIN plug as the MS2 but different colored wires. The pin assignments for the 10 pin DIN are shown in Illustration 3. The wire assignments for the MS2 are as follows: pin wire 1 red 2 black 4 orange/black 8 brown silver wire to plug ground When I had a broken pin, I took a broken 6 Illustration 2 Illustration 3 MS1 unit and cut the good cable off. The wires on the MS1 are different. In this case I soldered the wires this way: MS1 MS2 purple red red black yellow orange/black grey brown silver ground wire to silver ground wire THE MS1 has extra wires not connected to the MS2, but soldered to the MS1 plug (black, orange, green, blue). They are not connected to anything, just cut them off. |

Sorry, Pin out diagram won't play ball but I'll give you the position of reference numbers as described; Looking at the plug with the internal "flat" at the bottom, and noting that the pins are numbered in order RIGHT to LEFT Top row of three, from RIGHT to LEFT 1,2,3. Middle row; 4,5,6,7. Bottom Row; 8,9,10. Cross reference these with; The wire assignments for the MS2 are as follows: pin wire 1 red 2 black 4 orange/black 8 brown silver wire to plug ground. AND; The wires on the MS1 are different. In this case I soldered the wires this way: MS1 / MS2 purple / red red / black yellow / orange/black grey / brown silver ground wire to silver ground wire THE MS1 has extra wires not connected to the MS2, but soldered to the MS1 plug (black, orange, green, blue). They are not connected to anything, just cut them off. Hope you can figure this out and cross reference the two and make the right connections Chris Good Luck |

Thanks for the responses. This information has been helpful. After work today I am going to do the following.
Take the 10 pin plug casing of the adapter cable apart and try and visually identify which colored wire goes with each hole in the plug. I can then match this up with the info from the Toottoot website for the MS1 10 pin plug and figure out which colored wire should be wired to the cable of the adapter plug. I can then use Glen's info to verify that my wires are correct and then I will give it a test and plug it into my ECOS. If it works I will unsplice and wire in the adapter cable. I know I am cutting off the plugs of a perfectly good adapter cable but since I already have it I am just going to use it.
I will let everyone know how it works out.
Thanks again for the responses.
Chris
P.S. On a positive note, I was able to get my ECOS hooked up to my computer and the internet no problem and I was running trains with my Ipad and wifes Ipod, pretty cool stuff.

Good news. I was able to extend the cable for my MS1 and it is now working properly. I did the following. 1) Removed the plug from the MS1 with the broken pin. 2) Removed the 10 pin plug of the adapter cable. 3) Identified the four wires that I needed on the adapter cable that fed into the seven pin plug to be inserted into the ECOS. 4) Since I bought the 60126 extender cable I cut both plugs off of that. 5) I then simply wired the MS1 to the Extender Cable, Purple to Purple wire, Yellow to Yellow Wire, Brown to Brown Wire, and Red to Red Wire. 6) Finally I wired the extender cable to the adapter cable, Purple to Blue Wire, Yellow to White Wire, Brown to Brown Wire and Red to Red Wire, I found the proper wiring combination on the following website http://www.bogobit.de/mosta/ (Thanks to those on here that pointed me in the right direction the site was a big help) And finally I plugged it in and tested it and it works fine. Now of course, I need to say, this worked for me and I can't make any promises it will work for you. So please consider that before you start cutting your cables. But I can say now that I can reach anywhere on my layout with my MS1. Here is a pic showing it after the shrink wrap was put on over the cable where it is spliced. As you can see it is nice and long.
