I'm sure it's been asked before, but I'm trying to track down the part number for the older (Blue) control box for Marklin's electromagnetic crane 7051.

Also, I've heard that control box 7072 can be altered to work in place of the original part and was curious if anyone knew where I could find the instructions to do just that if I can't find the proper piece.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

You don't need to make any alterations to the 7072 to make it work with the 7051. Just plug the crane's leads in and away you go.

Of course, you may have to make up a label for the crane functions to match your wiring, but that is all.

If you want a proper control box, Tim Eckert has them on eBay.

Well thank you Daddy. I might even still have a spare 7072 floating around somewhere (Though I think it's warped as they're prone to do). I've also seen that very same listing on E-bay but wanted to stick with the classic blue (So it will match all the others). A label shouldn't be to hard. Particularly since I was assuming I'd have more difficult modifications to make.

Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving.
Cool

Hi,

look out for "Märklin 7170". The older, blue switches for the crane are marked with this number. Sometimes the switch appears on Ebay only described with this number and without any hint for its use with the crane. These offers are bargains in many cases.

Markus

Out of curiosity, do you use the hook (Freight) or the magnet (Scrap metal)?

I'd like to use mine for freight, but don't know where I'd find flat car loads that would work.

Hi,

Smaller nails work fine, my children prefer these piles of staples:

Balls from small roller-bearings are also very nice, but they also roll everywhere yo never find them back. Crying

That has to be just the cutest thing I've seen all day! LOL

I was really thinking more along the lines of crates that could be hooked or consists other than scrap that would actually use an electromagnet. Since I'm in the opening stages of this particular project though, I'll keep the staples and nails in mind.

Oz,

The only Marklin wagons I know that are made for the 7051 crane hook AND magnet are the 4520:

... and 4614, 4625 freight type wagons:

They have nifty little articulated steel cradles at the top of the containers so the crane can catch them:

I think the low slung transformer cars do too, like the 4617 and 4618:

What I've done in the past (as a kid) is to glue metal parts to the underside of the plastic transformers or similar on various container cars too .. that works great with the magnet !

Hope that helps ^^

Yumgui,

I will definitely keep those in mind. My local dealer actually got a hold of a 2,000 piece collection recently, I'll look to see if any of those were included. I've also tinkered with the idea of gluing metal to the inside of different crates etc. to use. Those cars look so neat though... might have to talk to Santa.

Besides all the good answers given in the above-mentioned observations, one could also just give you the replacement part number orders on the control console, so console can be ordered from Märklin.
And the number is: 97170
Philip.

Let's keep it simple.

Hi Philip,

unfortunately the control box ( last number: 971700 ) isn't available from Marklin any more.

The 7072 worked like a charm. It's weird actually, I've got a wiring book that states, somewhat misleadingly, not to connect 7072 to this circuit. They key to this though is the circuit, not the control box.

There's also a grab bucket that you can use with the 7051. An online seller here in NZ has them for sale (I think Yum may have brought one from him).

Yep, I confirm ... bought that same bucket from this seller, thanks to BD btw ^^ ThumpUp

Good quality item, reasonable price and shipping costs, good contact ... the seller is a member of this forum too, you will find him under the name "jptrains" BigGrin

Adds a whole new dimension to the crane as you can pick up just about anything to scale; sand, gravel, rocks, ... M&Ms, bubble gum, macaroni ... etc. Flapper

No fair! I finally settled on building a scrap yard, using the magnet and THEN you post this.

Maybe at some point down the road. Right now I'm looking at cutting and fashioning a sheet of tin plate in to armor skirts used by the Wehrmacht. 7-10 should do the trick I think. That will be the operational part. Around them, probably under them too, I'll build a plastic model of the scrap yard proper. I'm hoping the end result will be a functional diorama.
