The locomotive's serial number often starts with a letter, after this list: No letter = Mechanical Reversing Unit V = Electronically controlled mechanical reversing unit (Vorshaltelektronik) E = Electronically controlled mechanical reversing unit or a fully electronic unit R = 5 star propulsion, Regulated (Fünf-Sterne-Technik) D = Digital control H = Digital control, High performance propulsion M = Delta (Mehrzugbetrieb) S = C-Sinus-Motor (some C-sinus locomotives are reported to have a H) The serial number label is black with coloured print. The tendency of my locomotives indicates this "time table": Print colour Silver, 6 digits = 1981 - 1987 Print colour Silver, 8 digits = 1988 - 1991 Print colour White, 8 digits = 1992 - 1996 (Also my 39221 from 2000) Print colour Orange, 8 digits = 1996 - 2005 Print colour Green, 8 digits = 2006 - 2009 Print colour Green, 9 digits = 2010 - 201? The two first numbers = year Added, reminded by H0: the first number in the serial number (after the letter, if any) indicates the final digit in the production year. Examples: 28536 means a analogue locomotive from 1982. M9139930 means a DELTA locomotive from 1999. S6070502 means a C-sinus locomotive from 2006. H11061196 means a digital high performance propulsion locomotive from 2011. The locomotives from 1981 and earlier have no serial number. Edit 07. I do have one loco that does not seem to follow the year number convention.. it is the 39607 as it has a S1 serial number - I guess that it could have been produced late 2001 for the 2002 release... I will double check the serial number on the weekend..

I see on my 37320, the SBB Re 10/10, that they have 9 digits, including the initial "H". Re 6/6: H10220042, Re 4/4II: H10148245. Probably the first two numbers "10" are for 2010 Does anybody else have the same experience?

Your (old) post said 8 digits - and the new numbers have 8 digits (and a leading letter). So this seemed to match, it only looked like a 2011 number in 2010. If your old post was "leading letter plus 7 digits" then I would have shouted: "there are 8 digits now!" A digit is a digit. That can be 0..1 for binary, 0..9 for decimal, 0..f for hexadecimal, 0..z for whatsthenameofthegame, ...

The serial number put on my locos purchased in 2010 also reflect this change. It could suggest indeed, that the extra digit is needed to indicate that the locomotive is produced in 2010. An older locomotive of mine from 2001 has serial number:H1091823 while my Re 620 has serial number H10141948. Maybe nice to know that Koll's catalogue has some information about Märklins serial numbering system in their introduction. OTOH some 37xxx came with compact C Sine or SDS.

While I have a few digital items, I have not made the plunge into digital. This forum may be the impetus to get me going on it. I'm at work now, so I don't have the model numbers, but I have a Marklin GG1 and a New York Central diesel, both fullly digital. I've had them for two years now, and never put them on the tracks. Joined: 18/02/2008(UTC) Posts: 1,334		Hi, Well, I have the set although I will not do a review. Anyway these crocs move very smooth and I consider them great models. They have good interior details. I also like the sound. The green colour seems almost unnoticeable more blueish, but only with some types of light it can be slightly noticed. I prefer this green than the green of previous crocs. There is realism with some non-synchronism between the 2 sets of wheels. I like a lot the new led white lights (they almost seem halogen lights - kidding, but I really like them a lot). The wheels also have great look, and the rods give the model a super look when in motion. When stoped I prefer look at the rods of the CE6/8III. In motion is the opposite. The green model doesn't represent the typical Ep. III croc, but the fact is that there was at least one like this (see MM 1/2013). The difference is in the handrails arrangement and a welded side door. I expect the typical green model to be produced soon... One thing that could be a bit better is the window cleaner which could be coloured. Also, in the brown croc, the moveable parts (half bridges?) in the extremes could have a thicknes closer to scale (but this way they are more robust). We may think in more realism, like opening of the motors doors (if I can them this way), but I think that is good more for display locos and not for running (layout) locos. Also I think it is better suited for bigger scales (0, 1, etc). It is a real M model, very robust, great look, great running characteristics and with lots of accurate details. It also has its value. I am very happy with the set. I think it is a must have, but doesn't need to be the 37565 set... maybe just one of them , the 37566, 37567, or the ones to come. Almost sure I will have other crocs of this mould.

I am interested in this lok, but I would like to have it in one of the later versions, either regular service with one door shut and the steps removed, or as a shunting version with one pantograph and the modified ends. Note that locos made before about 1981 will not have the SN sticker. -Brandon

Here's an example of the Serial number on a 3674 (corrected number) Class 216 Diesel Loco, Number D9125938, the "D9" first two characters indicating this one is Digital and was produced in 1989 Often the label will be found on the motor, but also can be on the chassis body but you should not normally have to take anything apart to see it. Keep in mind that Marklin only started issuing serial numbers around the early 1980's so if your Loco's have no serial number label, either they are pre-1981, or the label has been removed. If you provide some specifics about your loco('s), ie the Marklin item number, what model it is of, colour and the road number we should be able to narrow it down.
