I'm sure this is not good.

Accidentally two wires touched during some experimenting. Unfortunaely I don't know exactly which ones.

I heard the 6002 Trafo click with an overload - the system rebooted, now the IB-650 immediately goes to the message:

Attention
Extern. Voltage (see image) and Red LED blinking - won't go to Ready.

It is totally disconnected from everything except power in.

DAMN DAMN DAMN.

If I recall, something is blown, an output Driver???

I have stronger expletives, but this is a family show.

Any thoughts?

I've only ever had my one apart once, Steve (to change the rotary encoders) but I seem to recall it's pretty obvious which are the output drivers. You get in through the bottom - there's 5 (i think) plastic bungs that you need to wind a small screw into then yank out. The whole thing will pretty much fall to bits after that.

Good luck

I thought a few of you might like to know how I got on with this - well today was finally the day. I've had a few distractions, some work on the layout, various other things and I wanted to leave this until I was in the right mindset, (and had enough free space in my cramped working area).

So this afternoon I tackled it. It turned out to be relatively simple, bearing in mind that I do have Soldering skills and am reasonably comfortable with minor electronic repairs.

I was already pretty certain the output drivers were the problem, I started with removing the BD535 and testing that - sure enough, dead short across the Emitter and Collector. And also compared it with the replacement BD909 which is normally no circuit between those two pins.

Removal was simply clipping the three pins, unsolder and remove each remaining pin and finally cleaning out the hole through the PCB with a solder-sucker. I could have used solder-wick also but it was not required.

I was also pretty sure the BD536 was ok but decided to replace it also with a BD910 - I tested it once it was removed and sure enough it was ok but I know at least that I have replaced with a pair of matching (better rated) components.

Applied some fresh thermal paste for the other components against the heatsink and it's now working well much to my relief. Photos of before and after repair attached.

Cheers
