A Luxembourg diesel loco recently sold on eBay for this amount. Is this loco that rare? I have never seen even an Crocodile go much past $800.00

What other Marklin loco's would be that sought after?

Thanks,

Art

It's not a 3067, it's a 3063. Yes, it is rare, more rare than a 3045, but less rare than a 3052. Out of the "recent" (ie not released as 800 series) locs, it is one of the few rare locos that appeared on the official catalogue.
3150 might sell for a little less, but I have noticed that its price fluctuates. What other loc(s) am I forgetting?

Cheers,
Ricky Smile

Ricky,

Thanks for the info. What exactly is the difference between the 3067 and the 3063?

3067 is DSB(Danish Railways), 3063 is CFL(Luxembourg Railways), same engine body - different paint scheme and lettering. The 3063 had a much shorter production life than the 3067. Cheers!

Hi Art,

a couple of pics I found on the net, in addition to Railsurfer's precisions:

UserPostedImageUserPostedImage
On the first pic, the 3063 is on the right while the 3067 is on the left. The one in the middle is the 3066 (SNCB - Belgian Railways.)
You figure it out on the second pic. Smile

Cheers,

Märklin 3063, series 1600 from CFL, was produced from 1965 to 1967 only.

The locomotive was also available as a part kit, Märklin 3963, from 1972 to 1976.
Due to the high second hand prices fake models (repainted other Nohab versions) have been reported.

Most 3067 sold up to 210 euro on ebay results.

No one sold more that 250 euro.

I have a 3066 with a 3063 box. I wonder how much the box is worth?

I too was surprised at this auction.

Thanks for the link, The 2011 Koll price guide said 900 Euro (approx $1,229).

It is nearly same price at ebay auction, Mint Empty box for 3063 between 40 and 70 Euro.

Well, as you may know, I am a big fan of Nohabs. I even have some by other makers....
I do not have the 3063, which is the CFL mark-too pricey for me and there are others that I still would like.
I have a question:
The auction picture shows the 3063 in what appears to be a 3066 box.Usbeauty has a 3066 in a 3063 box. I have a 3066 in a 3067 box. What I would like to know is whether this was a common practice by M* to use whatever box fit the basic style, and whether it affects the value. My feeling is that I should keep the loco in the original box, even though it shows the wrong mark>

As far as I know all the Nohab boxes are 3066 boxes, Märklin did just put a sticker over the number saying 3063 or 3067. I would therefore think that it was impossible for Märklin to produce too many boxes for the 3063 or 3067 as they could just have taken the sticker off or changed it. I think that the locos have been swapped around after they have left the factory, but that is only my opinion.

Thor

Hi Thor,

let's not forget the 3068! It also came in a 3066 box with stickers at the ends of the box. The problem is that these stickers are now very easy (too easy) to copy, and therefore fake a 3066 with an "original box."

I bought a 3063 at an auction some 25 years ago. The auction was not advertised as having Marklin, and the trains were buried in the middle of old collectible radios and other stuff I cannot remember. I was able to buy a 3045, 3046, 3047, 3053, 3063, passenger and freight wagons in lots for a really cheap price! There were also rails and transformers sold at that auction for a ridiculous price, but I didn't have enough cash to buy everything. A possible explanation in these real cheap prices is that the original owner had died, and the survivors didn't know anything about Marklin, and it was sold as it was not worth much. After the auction I sold the 3046 and 3047 (I already had them) that were sold in the same lot as the 3045, and that paid for the whole amount I spent on that day. So basically I got the 3045, 3053 and 3063 for free!!! That can happen once in a lifetime! Later I had to sell my 3045 to generate some cash. I still have the 3063, and I think my 3063 is a real one (because why would you fake a 3063 if you don't want to sell it right away for a steep price?), but how can I prove it if I want to sell it?!? Unsure

Cheers,
Ricky Smile

Hi Ricky,

The faked 3063 which came to the marked about 30 years ago, are easy to identify, even if you only know a photo of the original loco: The colors are to bright and to opaque, espacially the yellow stripes. The fakes are "better" than the originals.

Even the stickers are not as easy to fake as it appears. Original stickers are nearly transparent today and have a glazed surface. Not so easy to fake.

Regards

Markus

Well, I am going to have to look at my old boxes, but I am pretty sure that my 3066 came in a box that had the 3067 DSB livery on the box art.The original owner had included a picture of a 3066 cut from a catalog.
I would really like to confirm that M* shipped Nohabs in whatever box was to hand-it does seem to be the case for a couple of us.I have a couple of NSB Nohabs (I think 3043 and 3143)that AFAIK have similar issues.I guess I need to dig out all my Nohabs and check-I have been looking for an excuse to do this anyway.

Hi George,

ad 1. A big YES. In the 1960s and '70s M was a bit sloppy when it came to model numbers & boxes - never mind.

ad 2. NO - not at all.

ad 3. Another YES - keep your darlings together, my friend Smile

That 3063 that sold for so much was my brother's and I am now putting another one on Ebay along with a 3015. We had an uncle who was married to a German lady and he got Terry started on Marklin and would bring things back for him. Terry was stationed in Europe for awhile and picked up more and I went to Switzerland a couple of times and brought Marklin back.
I am learning so much as I sell these for my brother who is in bad health. Terry was surprised when that first engine hit $500 and was super happy when it ended. I have enjoyed reading about the 3063 and how to tell the real ones from the fakes.

The crocodile was made just about forever. Most of the ones from the late 50's to mid 70's may not go past the $800 mark but an early one in proper condition can cost you many thousands. Few have survived in good condition because the early ones were very prone to zinc pest and were also very expensive at a time people had no money to spend on expensive toys. There are many other sought after locos that will surpass the 3063 you are asking about, most of the them would be early ones but there are 1960's models like the Austrian version of the 3022 or the 3045 that can fetch high prices too.

I got my crocodile ccs800 in 1950! It had then a lot of use, mechanically and cosmetically! I 1955 it was sent to Marklin to have it repaired (yes Märklin did that!). It came back beautifully, old motor parts in a little bag and the main body replaced! And it did say 3015 on it. Didn't make a difference then, but today it does. I still have it and it is still beautiful, but not as valuable as if it would still have the ccs800 body. By the way, it was 00 scale then, H0 came a few years later.

Perhaps it still has value because you have the story of the repair? And it is all Marklin in the repair so that has value too. It certainly wouldn’t diminish the model in my eyes if I had it.
