What do the panel think of this as a feasibility study... I would like to put lighting into carriages with fixed wheels (as opposed to bogies - for reasons that will become apparent) and I was wondering if the following could be considered. The wheel set axles are secured in place using plastic holders and each wheel is isolated from the other to prevent short circuits as these are powered by a two-rail system. This is achieved with an isolating bush between one of the wheels and the shaft of the other. If I were to ensure the isolated wheels are on opposite sides of the carriage, this would leave each of the two axles in direct contact to the power supply. I could then use spring steel or brass connecting strips bolted to the underside of the carriage and in contact with the axles and providing power in to the carriage - and, hey presto, power to connect a bulb or an led. I appreciate this isn't the best solution, and certainly isn't prototypical, but lighting options in Z Scale carriages seems quite limited. Also, the lighting would vary depending on speed, unless someone has a brilliant (  ) idea in how to stabilise any fluctuation. If this works, it could be adapted to fit under bogie wheel sets but would need a wired feed into the carriage. Your thoughts would be appreciated! Pete |

Lights in z scale??? Man you must have excellent eyesight.. What are you going to use.. LEDs are going to scale into those large factory lights..
I would love to see the result of this experiment... Please blow up the pictures to 800x600 as my eyesight is nowhere as good as yours is... |

I think I need to get hold of an old - experimental - carriage to try this on and present it here for comment. I doubt the flicker-free option would fit in unless I install that bit in one carriage and feed thin wires through to the other carriages in the construct - but this could be problematical if I ever want to separate them or there a crash and I have to recover them from a difficult to reach area. That's happening too often now so I don't want to make matters worse! |

I see DCC Concepts sell nano lights, so I might try and locate these in the UK and see what I can do. I will also ask them if these can be installed in Z scale. I'll let you know if I have any luck.
