Hi dear friends,

Sorry to be abscent for such a long time, but I told you I had to think for some time to obtain enough strenght to start my next item : the coal bunker with crane. The starting point was the Faller kit, as shown in next picture :

UserPostedImage

As I was telling in one of my former threads (converting Marklin's turntable), I was not very happy with this kit. For the purists among you: be assured, the Faller kit is absolutely prototypical (!!). I just do not like the solid metal all welded construction style, so I have been planning and thinking for an alernative, more romantic [:p] construction. Being kind of lazy, I discovered that by using some extra Faller sets, one can make remarkable progress: I used twice the portal crane kit and two sand towers as a basic for my construction.

Here is a first pic of the basic frame I made : the sanding towers (minus one frame) make the central stay, and the portal crane verticals, minus top part, make the side supports. The horizontal crane construction serves as a support for the platforms.

UserPostedImage

I like the epoch II style of it. I consider it to be the DRG first attempt for a unity construction, that finally resulted in the Faller kit wink.

Here is another pic of the frame. It is far from complete, but I show it to give you some clues on how I made the full device. The biggest challenge is to keep the weighing house in the original place. I therefore cut out part of the sandtower's frame to allow lodging of the original plate support. More on that later...

UserPostedImage

Hope you like my new project wink

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi all, and thanks for the interest biggrin

Here is some more work done : the placement of the bunkerhouse. First, I wanted to make a support between the two pilars. Here it is : (comes from the extension parts of the bockcrane)

UserPostedImage

Then, the house needed to be shortened, since it did not fit any longer between those wide posts

UserPostedImage

Here is a pic of the house, roof and floor that were adapted. Note the recess in the base plate, that we need to have it safely lodged in between the opening in the pilar.

UserPostedImage

Make sure the openings in the roof are in line with the holes in the top plate, to accomodate the weighing rod.

UserPostedImage

A final shot of the overall fitting of the house...

UserPostedImage

Until soon, for some more ...Smile

Yours,

Bob

Hi friends,

somewhat more reporting on this construction:

Crazy as I am, I could not resist in making an interior in the bunkerhouse. Here you see it :

UserPostedImage

Even more crazy, I wanted a light installed in it (otherwise, the work was in vein, since you can hardly look inside...[:I]

I used two small SMD leds :

UserPostedImage

Now, let the light shine .... biggrin

UserPostedImage

Finishing it further ( still not fully done, since I am looking to make some lights at the outside as well) :

UserPostedImage

And a look at my growing loc depot :

UserPostedImage

Until next time..

Bob

Hi friends,

Finally, the bunker is finished !! (apart from further weathering it).

I found excitingly fine messing handrails and stairs ! (Bavaria, at the Kölner Messe in November). Fitted them immediately to my bunker :

UserPostedImage

Also fitted the Campbell shades and smalles Viesmann bulbs (1,5 Volts) :

UserPostedImage

The bulbs give only very little light, very realistic, but hard to see. Nevertheless, it can create nice atmospheres :

UserPostedImage

Still need to do a lot of work on the decor, but as far as the coalbunker is concerned, that 's it folks.... Next comes the round house, but that may even take much longer...

Best wishes,

Bob

Your coal bunker looks perfect, and these brass stairs and handrails... no comparisson any more with the kit you started from.[:p]

What I like very much is also the combination of the blueish LED light in the operator's cab and the warm bulb light from the spots.

Thanks for the compliments, friends.

Luis, I will be using the former Pola, now Faller 'Freilassig' roundhouse. But I will repaint it completely (do not like the yellow color). Will start a new thread as soon as i have something to show wink - In the mean time I have to sort out the problem with the turntable (https://www.marklin-users.net/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=5162) I am trying out Boll's decoder.

Bob

Hi all,

Still owe you some report on the crane...

I selected the fine-scale Bochmann, that is still available with Karl-Heinz Klier in Köln, Germany.

It is a straight forward, but very time consuming and delicate assembly. It comes in a flat envlope, two etched brass plates full of tiny parts. Wow, hardly imaginable you can make such a large 3D construction of that. Took me several weeks. But the result is marvelous (IMHO) ! Have a look for yourself :

UserPostedImage

Naked brass always looks exciting but cannot be left like this, alas.

Took my crane outside in the sun :

UserPostedImage

Then, finally in its place :

UserPostedImage

and

UserPostedImage

(last picture to be compared with the very first one in this thread [:p][:p])

Coals are still failing, as so many other scenery details...

Truly yours,

Bob

That's just beautiful, Bob...

If I may dare ask, how much does this kit cost? Does it come with the portal too?

Thanks guys for the compliments biggrin. Such a relief it all looks nice after all that work...
Luis : the kit costs, for the crane only : 148,50 Euro (ref number 33.915LS "B&K Coalcrane Rosenheim") The portal itself seems no longer available. I had to beg Mr. Klier for one, and he could retrieve one from a client who never built it. The portal is from plastic and very, very delicate in handling. I did not like it. If you try, you may get hold of one as well, if you hurry. But mind you: the quality is lousy ! Rumours are that Klier will develop a totally new brass portal...

Address : karl-heinz.klier@freenet.de

All the best,

Bob

Bob -

Amazing detail and work. Thank you for posting the photos to keep all of us inspired!

Are you attaching the crane and tower to a solid piece of balsa wood? Looks like a great way to bring landscape items up to track level. I will have to remember that when I start landscape details on my layout.

Keep up the wonderful post.
