I just installed the Azatrax MRD-1 detector for a three track shadow station and I am very pleased with it. See http://www.azatrax.com/i...odel-train-detector.html

I use it in an "across-the-track" mode to notify me (remote LED lights up) of occupancy - depending on train direction, I would either stop the train immediately or just when the LED goes out so as have the train safely parked in the hidden areas. The detector does have an output relay but I'm not using it. The installation was done on the finished layout but it was quite simple - needed to drill from below and had to check my measurements so as not to drill into track - ruler reading skills all that was required.

John,

I'm using 3-rail --- C track. The MRD-1 is powered separately with Azatrax's 9V DC power supply (cost ~ $10 US) and it can power 20 units. (Voltage requirements are 8-14 V AC or DC --- I was uncomfortable using the 18VA transformer and at $10 didn't feel that their power supply was too expensive.) I have another hidden area and will use at least one unit for it although I am thinking of two units for each hidden area - one at either end.

The across-the-track (interrupt) mode I am using simply requires that the IR LED emitter and the phototransistor are placed on either side of the track(s). In the reflective mode, the sensors come out between the rails of a track - this could be tricky with C or M track but the loco slider might even cause issues with K track.

Dan,

with the wiring for the remote LED indication, did you use their instructions? In the future would you see using these with an s88?

Thomas,

I used their instructions - it's very simple and straightforward. As for s88, etc, I don't see myself going that way. While my locos are digital, my switches are not and I'm not much interested in event triggering by contact tracks, etc. I like to run with complete operator control.
