I am a new to MRR, and it is my first post.

I got a new starter set with Mobile station 2, in loco control screen, there is a turtle sign mapped to button F5.
I pressed it, and it is high lighted, but I can't tell what happened on the loco.

I see the same icon on CS2 manual, saying "Switching Range" not sure what it means.

Anyone knows?

Thanks

It should mean the loco should run slower when it is on, perhaps also with a reduced acceleration/brake delay. It is intended to give better control for small and slow switching/shunting operations.

When I press it when the loco is running, I did not notice the speed is changed.

Maybe it only affect the top speed setting?

It disables the acceleration & deceleration delay settings in the decoder, so you have a more direct control over loco speed when doing "precision" manouvres as shunting and such.

Normally this feature is on F4 (the top key right from the display).

It turns acceleration and braking delay off. You can notice the difference when you change the speed of a loco.
With some locos, it also reduces the speed.

Here's a screen shot with the turtle symbol at F4:

BTW: The loco on the screen shot has an old, big C-sine motor and with this loco, F4 also reduces the speed of the loco.

This turtle sign used to apear in my MS1 when i was using my BR86...i noticed that it doesn't show anymore...
I recently changed to a MS2...must check to see if it something related with the loco or with the MS1.

Normally the turtle symbol should mean reduced speed, while only reduced acceleration/brake delay should have another symbol, looking something like this:

But maybe this isn't really consistent between different locos.

I think the turtle is on MS's and the crossed speed curve is on CS's... I may be wrong, of course...

I have seen both symbols on the MS1 (not for the same loco though).

Yesterday I bought a mobile station II. I noticed that all of my locos that are equiped with ESU mfx decoders, in the display screen of my mobile station II, have two turtles instead of one turtle for shunting mode and the other symbol for ABV.
I looked in the icon database of my mobile station II and I did not find the second icon. Is this a bug of the software? My software version is 1.3 (I think). The functionality though of these two functions is normal. The first turtle disables the ABV (f4) and the other enables shunting mode (f3).
Is my version of Mobile Station the latest. If not how can I upgrade it (I don't have a central station).

No, this is not a fault.
With an ESU lokprogrammer you can set your icons accordingly with M4 decoders, someone in the past has activated both function with the same symbol, you could have 10 turtle symbols if you activate all of them. This is one benefit from ESU M4 decoders, most likely the decoders you've purchased have been set that way.
While Maerklin locos have mfx decoder and their protocol is not open to change icons, the loco comes programmed from the factory with its correct icon formation, whereas ESU has this section open so you can adjust each function to your own desire.

Latest version is 1.5. To do the update, connect the MS to a Central Station II with current software (e. g. visit a friend or a dealer).

River6109. You are right about Esu decoders and I do have a Lokprogrammer. I program all my decoders so that f3 is shunting mode with a turtle as icon and f4 is ABV on/off with the symbol described by perz a few posts earlier.
With Mobile station I there is no problem, the symbol for ABV on/off is displayed normaly but in Mobile station II this symbol is altered with a turtle.
