Does anybody have an instruction manual for this engine they could scan and post the English pages of please? I have bought one unboxed screwed to its board for considerably less than a boxed example and having wanted one of these since seeing the GEM(?) Ho kit in the 1960's W&H catalogue I have bought it. I have the Marklin magazine article about updating the electronics but I would like to know the basics first on how to lube and run it to ensure all is well before thinking about going digital.

Thank-you in advance and if runs as well as the E44 with 18 wagons behind (thats all I took to a venue large enough to run it) I shall be happy.

On a completely different note is wear a problem running long heavy loads with 1 or Maxi? I have a Maxi F unit which will happily pull 15-20 MTH wagons round the garden but given Marklin no longer make Maxi Cursing I've started to worry about wear. I don't want to see a A-A unit running 5 cars to prolong its life but also having smooth gears pulling nothing would be sad too.

I will post some pics but currently I'm in Jo'burg working to pay for trains instead of England running them.

I don't have a manual, but I can comment on the maintenance and wear based on experiences with a large number of Marklin, Huebner and Maxi G1 locos Some of the very early Maxi locos that had metal (brass) driving gears failed very early if they did not get lubrication fro0m thje start. All later models have the tough nylon gears and can take good loads and heavy use if they are lubed every 30--40 hours of running. The manuals are inconsistent with Marklin G1 models on lubing instructions. I suggest LGB gear grease for all gears and only Marklin standard lub oil (same as HO) for all bearings) USE SPARINGLY. Check often if running outside or pulling heavy loads - more than 12 wagons. If wear happens, check the Marklin Web Site - I have found that all gears that wear out in any model are available still, and are very cheap and easy to replace. Sometimes the older models are listed with later models so check a number of loco numbers in that same family to identify the part. Especially keep the first idler gear well lubed with oil on its very thin side thrust washers and its shaft bearing if you plan on pulling heavy leads. Otherwise go for it and relax - they can take way more than you originally think. BigGrin Peter

I can help you out if you had no luck so far.
I am not sure how picky Marklin is about copyright.

What conserns me is that all paperwork considdered My model (the 5516) should run on dc ac and digital. From the switches on the bottom one is for pentographs and a 3 position switch, wich is disabled. How do you operate yours?
I have a 6021, but it will not work right. It does move in AC, but thats it.
The manual is nice but minimal.

Hi

The problem might be that the 5516 was produced with the original Marklin 1 Gauge Digital system before the change by Marklin to the Motorola system for digital in 1 gauge in 1994. The 5516 will be equipped with an older decoder that only responds to the old Marklin digital 1 format and controller (6030), not the 6021 which uses the new Motorola format. To operate it with the 6021 you will probably need a new decoder...

Hi!

The 6021 in the default setting (DIP switch 2 on, all others off) sends both MM II and MM I and all decoders that support either MM I or MM II can be used without problems.

AFAIK old gauge I digital locos used DCC because the old MM decoders could not be used for 2-rail.
Märklin 6030 and 6027 use DCC.
Märklin 6020 uses MM I, 6021 uses MM II.
Regards
Tom
