Hi Jeroen,
Wow, that's a quite complete list! Did you make it by yourself? If so, you could add a few models:
37991 Big Boy 37999 Wheatered Big Boy (2005 pieces made) 3700 Amtrak ICE (although I think this is not a "real" american model, limited edition 1994) 83341 Amtrak X995 (Insider model)

Hi all,
Most items made the list when they surfaced on Ebay one time or another, and I completed it utilizing a similar list dating back five years or so from the archives of the MML.
Thanks for the updates Sander!

Hi Guys. 2 quick questions/ comments. I think the weathered big boy was #37992. On the subject of this locomotive, has it been produced yet? I have seen a photo, but no other info or pricing from a few normally well informed dealers I asked about it. If it is out, who knows where I can get one? |

Hi folks,
I updated my list above by changing 37999 to 37992 for the dark horse and amending a few omissions (notably the Alcos and Mikados).
If you find anything missing please note it here?

Yuk! I never saw a Big Boy on DVD look like the 37992. Sorry for the childish reaction but I think it is mightily overdone.
By the way, tank car set 4861 (Alaska/Shell tankers), which has been rather expensive ever since I keep an eye out for it on Ebay, is now reaching astronomical heights: last week one went for something like 80 euros; today there is a US one presently at over 80 Euros, a German one together with 4860 presently at 100 Euros, an Italian one waiting for a first bid at 60 Euros, and a German one at 28 Euros with three days to go. Conclusion: although it would be nice to combine 4861 with the Texas tankers I do not think that is going to happen on my layout.

I was lucky to get a 4861 about a month ago on ebay.de for 45.50 EUR (+18 for shipping). Somehow bidders out there missed it, another 4861 ended at about the same time, at 70 or so EUR. once in a lifetime? |

Thanks for that list, jerdenberg and all who contributed,
I could assign some of my older freight cars now. But there are still three that are missing in the list:
40631 Union Pacific F7 B-unit 4774 SOO Line gondola (like 4575, but white color with a red fields on each side)
NYC gondola (also like 4575, but in black). Don't now the number.

Hi Paul, Hans Martin, thanks for the additional updates. I guessed the NYC gondola might be another 4774, so I provisionally inserted it as 4774 C. Confirmation/correction welcome! As to the Texas set, could that be a big box containing all of the well-known sets? (I remember having seen such a thing on Ebay, but as I do not like the 50' boxcars, and the two I have are too new for "my" era 1957/58, I did not pay attention to its exact contents.) Steven: I am not sure what you mean by "location for pictures", but Märco's first picture is at http://www.trainweb.org/railpix/ampix/icefj1.jpg. Does that help? Jeroen |

Jeroen Hello Jeroen, I do not quite understand what you mean by saying this ?? Is it your own reaction that you consider childish or is it Märklin's way to weather the loco ??? I for my part can remember an article in a Märklin Magazine couple of editions back in which Big Boys were shown. And they were really really old and worn !!!! Many regards, Johann |

Hi Ulf,
I referred to my Yuk as being childish. My main problem with the weathering is that the BB looks a new machine that has been mistreated with paint rather than a grimy workhorse; the ones I have seen on DVDs and on photos were either looking well-groomed or the kind of drab greyish dirty you would expect from all the soot and other stuff raining down on them (OK, some traces of white from water running down the sides). |

Hi Johann, Steven,
It is certainly better than the 15°C we had last week, but for running my trains I would not mind a more moderate 22-23°C, as the attic of our garage gets rather hot in this weather.

I have to dive in on the 37992 subject. They always look different in person, but I have an extreme dislike for Marklin's weathering job on the 37978 Mikado and the Big Boy looks done the same way. Yes, they do get nasty, but the weathering its self is not done properly whatsoever. It's a bunch of grimy paint shot all over and random brush strokes. They never studied a photo to see the proper little details and locations for certain touches. This is disheartening to me as I love weathering and feel bad doing it myself to a $400 or so Mikado, but its the only way I'll get one done right. (I just can't bring myself to weather my 37970 though) |

Yesterday I looked with admiration at the red weathered streamlined loco they show off in the Year-with-Maerklin video; that is such a contrast with the weathering of 37992; didn't they see that at Maerklin?

Sander, excuse me but isn't the weathered version #37992 ? John Sorry for my very late response, you're right, the weathered version is the number 37992 instead of the 37999. |

The funny thing about this topic is ...
(no, not the prevalent off topic posts, we are all used to them by now and maybe are even in some way addicted to messing up the serious enquiry of some information seeking member ...)
... that the guy who has started this topic, Jeremy Palmer, has never returned to see his 48 answers and that therefore we still do not know at all what he meant by "Marklin USA Sets 1 and 2" in the first place.
Maybe we just overwhelmed him by giving him lists of Marklin Sets numbers one through 583, and he decided he had enough of this hobby ???
