Hi All,

I'm sure this topic must have been covered before but I can't find anything about it.

I've been looking through some old Marklin Insider magazines and found a layout I quite like. It has all the K track pieces identifed in pictures of the layout. Is there any listing that matches K track piece to C track piece? Is the geometry essentially the same?

Regards,

John

No, the geometry is NOT the same.

The R1 curve and basic straight segments of tracks are similar; 360cm radius and 180cm long. (although no 180cm long C-track exist!)
However, the parallel R2 and the short switches are a little different.
Huge differences appear when you go to slim switches (R9) or if the original trackplan uses flexible tracks. These parts must be redone completly (if at all possible) with the VERY LONG slim switches from the C-track, and segments of tracks instead of flex-track. -Also remember that C-track does not have a slim DKW.

A list mathing K to C does not exist, and would not be of any use anyway, because of the above mentioned differences.

Track-plans found in the Märklin Magazine are normally developed for the two track systems, and the magazine often shows both.

---

If you could find an M-track plan to your liking, that would be very easy to transform to C, as the basic geometry is similar...
Best regards

Thanks Henrik - I was afraid of that. I'll just use the ideas behind the plan I like.

Tom - it's in the Marklin Insider Magazine 5/96 on page 26. This is part of a long series that Markus Nickl presented on the buildiing of his layout. I don't have all the issues relating to the layout but what I do have are wonderful because they also show how he thought through the wiring, how he added scenery and other aspects of the overall build. He is very practical - I'd be interested in finding anything else he has written too.

Do you have this particular issue? What I like about this layout is that his available floor space almost exactly equals mine and he has basically two independent "loops" which is what I would like to do...one to run continuously by itself and one that I would control more manually.

Any thoughts or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

John

Marklins track plan book for layouts over 10 feet gives the parts for K track at the back of the book. So if you found something you liked you could also build with K.

David - I'm a confirmed C Track guy. Do you mean that this track plan book will show me a comparison between K and C track items so I can convert from one to the other?

Hi John. THe track plan book gives details of layouts which can be used with both C and K but there is no comparison for both types of tracks because as Henrik says the geometery is not the same.
If you like C track as you say then why bother with K unless you want to ballast by hand perhaps in a station area. Any layout with C track can also be used with K if you are prepared to make a few changes in size and design but the overall shape can be much the same.
You could copy the layout from the magazine then design your own version using either or both type of tracks.
