Hi all!

On my 40th birthday I got THE one present a wished for, a CS2 from Märklin! BigGrin
All is well so far and I found a bunch of useful information here. marklin-user forum rocks!

However, I can't get my MS1 to connect with the CS2. First it says's "NO MASTER". Then after the CS2 is upp and running it keeps restarting. It doesn't show up in the CS2 list of connected ms either. I have been searching for information on this problem here, but I couldn't find any information. Probably just me not typing in the magic search string...

Please help me to get this problem ironed out.

Best regards / Martin T

Hi Martin,

Well MS1 is not compatible with CS2, only MS2 is compatible with. Even CS1 Reloaded is not compatible with CS2.

I guess they intended to drop all MS1 and favorite people buying new ones. Another approch is that MS2 does not connect to tracks the way MS1 did. Only CS1-CS2 compatibility remains...

Emmanuel (sad with Marklin consumerism approach...)

Märklin says something different on their site: MS1 should be compatible with CS2.

Agree. MS1 should be compatible with cs2. No doubt. It's said in all of the documentation, as well as in the helpfile inside the cs2 itself. The question is why my ms1 would register properly?? It works excellent when connected through "the ugly box" to other layout with same locos and all.

Hi all!

After some serious searching...
I found that the MS1 might work with CS2 but needs to be updated using a CS1.

Anyone here with a CS1 living in Stockholm area who can help me with this?

Now that you mention this, I remember this was discussed here before.
IIRC we never found out which is the maximum MS1 version that won't work or which is the minimum MS1 version that will work with a CS2.
Which version do you have?

Should have remembered that earlier.

My CS1 is far from Stockholm ...

Hi again!

I browsed through most users here and realize that I'm now most willing to send my two MS1s to anyone in Europe who is kind enough to upgrade them for me. I'll pay for the return postage of course. I can also add some for the work if you like. Smile

That will hopefully give me a better chance of finding YOU kind and skilled enough to do it for a Märklin friend. RollEyes

A couple of questions about this:
Have you conected the MS1 into the left or the right slot of the CS2? In my case I have realized that when I conect the MS1 into the right slot of the CS2 I have to press it very tight, If I don't do that I will get the same message of no master as you got, but when I conect the MS to the left plug of the CS2 I have no problem at all.
Don't you have any Marklin dealer near your home, he should have a CS1 in case that the problem is the upgrade.
For me it is very rare that there is no information from marklin about the upgrade of the MS1.You should send a email to de Marklin tecnical service before sending your MS1 they will answer your question quikly.
Best regards
Eduardo

Hi Eduardo!
Thank you for your response!
I've tried both left and right port with same result. It keeps restarting all over in an endless loop. Blink blink blink. I'm going to reset it to factory settings, by doing "PRESET" to see if it helps.. No, it didn't help unfortunately...

Here's the item information from the MS1 I have:

MS1 (My first one)
HW:1.04010
BL:1.0
AP:1.14010
AN:60652
UOOO2CB8A

MS1 (My second one) - Which I haven't tried yet since I soldered a 7-pole connector to it to use as slave only previously.
HW:1.04010
BL:1.0
AP:1.14010
AN:29510

Hi, Martin!

"AP: 1.8" is the latest version. Your Mobile Stations have "AP: 1.1", so the software really is very old.
I'm afraid it won't work without update.

Okey, it makes sense. I'll check with my dealer if they want to help. I'll try to brive them by buying a few s88s and k83 modules maybe. RollEyes

of course would it be possible for you to have your MS1 updated throu a Märklin dealer close to you. You have Harambee Hobby and you have MJ-Hobbyexperten in your vicinity, and I'm sure they will be happy to help you to have them updated. They simply send them to Märklin. It will probaly cost you a couple of bucks, but do check with them. You have a third choise of dealer also: Leni's in Kimstad outside Norrkoping. They are closed for vacation until the 19/7. Her's the link to their homepage: http://www.lenislek-hobby.com/
And if it is to expensive to send them to Märklin, I know some dealer who have put the MS1 on sale, with the latest softeware version loaded.

Hi Dragos!

Yes, I spoke to MJ-Hobby, since I buy most of my Märklin stuff from them and they said they would send them back to Märklin for the update. There would be a cost and some weeks waiting. However, I was hopeing that they would have a CS1 in the shop and do it right away. But, you maybe right. Sending them back might be the best solution after all.

Can anyone here tell if it is possible to update the MS1 with an ECoS/CS1 Reloaded? SW ver. is 3.2.1.

The latest version 1.8 came with CS1 2.0.4 (2.0.3 included 1.7).
Same version is included with CS1 reloaded.
I presume ECoS can also be used to update the MS (the same software is used for ECoS and CS1R), but this is only a guess.

I'm able, ready, and willing to do the update.
But if Björn could do it, Martin would save some postage money ...

Tom:
I use an MS1 as an extra handcontroller and the SW version is 1.8. The problem is, I don't know if the MS1 has been updatet while on service with Märklin, or if it's been updated via my ECoS.
But, as you point out: ECoS and CS1 reloaded is exactly the same nowadays.

Excuse me:
I presume HW is "Hard Ware"
what is "AP", what does that mean ?
Is it written on the screen ? elsewhere ?

I dunno what AP stands for (maybe Application). You'll find it if you flip through the INFO screens on your Mobile Station (OPTIONS => INFO).

MS1 info categories:

HW - hardware version
BL - additional basic hardware code
AP - application/software version
AN - article number
U000xxxxx - serial number
UT - voltage track (the digital AC voltage send to the tracks)
UD - voltage digital/decoder (DC voltage for digital commands)
OVC - maximum output current

note: my MS1's show IT, not OVC but IT is almost the same as OVC (re Marklin service)

I was at Eurowest in San Carlos today and took the opportunity to speak to Tom Catherall about this. He was't aware of this issue.

At first he told me that there has never been an update to the MS1 firmware and that even the earliest MS1s work with a CS2 without any change. I told him about this thread and that folks are saying that the CS1 does update the firmware and he doubted it since all of his MS1s work flawlessly, even his earliest ones.

Luckily I had brought both my MS1s with me (I was actually hoping someone had a CS1 I could plug them into). I've never connected my MS1s to anything besides directly to my layout or to my CS2.

Tom plugged one of my MS1s into his CS2 which was running firmware 1.3.0. and the MS1 just continually flashed, exactly like when I plug it into my CS2 at home. He at first thought that the MS1 was faulty, but I assured him that both work fine at home when they're running the track, but just not as slaves to a CS2 (he didn't have an ugly box to connect to the track so I couldn't show him that, but they do both work fine). He tried various key combinations on the MS1, resetting the CS2, different connections/ports into the CS2, all the same. Just flashing on the MS1.

He thought this was a challenge to look into, but also said that Marklin has cut all ties to ESU. He specifically asked if I'd ever connected my MS1s to a CS1 reloaded (nope) and volunteered that Marklin doesn't support a CS1 Reloaded to be connected to a CS2.

When I asked him what I should do with two non-working MS1s, he told me how good the MS2 was...

Does anyone know of a CS1 in the SF bay area I could plug my MS1s into for a quick upate... Unsure

New MS1s show the current that is drawn along with the maximum current (IT) while older ones only show the maximum current (OVC).
IT or OVC depends on the hardware revision.

Hi everyone!

Okey. It seems I'm at the the end of the line with my MS1s here. Can't seem to find anyone local to make this upgrade for me.

I have put the MS1 in a Jiffybag ready to send it off to YOU :) for updating.
Please send my an E-mail with your address. Return postage is in the bag too.

You have a CS1 connected to Internet and knowledge on how to make the updating.

Looking forward to hear from you.

No need to have the CS1 connected to internet. The updating is plug and play, I remember it quite well from when I received my CS1 (which was already 2.0.4 or 3; it is now CS1R).
Ofcourse one needs the 10 to 7 pin little cable for the connection.
Only thing I'm not 100% sure of is whether CS1R will also do the update but my guess is close to it.
I'll send an email to Martin.
Kind regards, Henk

It's not fair to let 6 years plus go by without telling us "who done it".

Did the upgrade work?
