mixed consists - ABie-34 with BCi / Ci thunderboxes?

Hello, I know prototypically that rolling stock is often quite mixed. This is highlighted with new items such as 00792. My question is, would it be acceptable to mix item numbers 43138/43139 with say 43351? I would like to lengthen the consist as only 4 cars is a bit short and the only other era3 red coaches I can find is 43351 (think there is another one but do not know item number). Also note the Marklin image of 43351 looks brighter than what it actually is (see last image of 43351). Z0rOHBLglV6c,yg~~_12.JPG) Thanks! |

I have the 28508 set: The red coaches here would also go nicely with your thunderboxes On my layout I often run this train with extra green umbauwagen to make a longer train. The mixture of red and green coaches is quite pleasing! |

Thanks for the replies guys.
I was aware of the 26508 set but had not seen the 2858 set before! I quite like the 26508 set, the only 'small' issue is that the destination boards will be different - while the 43351 cars dont have boards at all.
As for my question, after lengthy research I have found the answer and it is yes! Marklin make a set with those red thunderboxes in Z gauge and an add-on set in Z with the ABie type as a suitable add-on for it.
I am looking at buying the BR64 to run them. I like the BR24 but the decoder is a let down. The BR86 would be nice too. |

hi, if you want to be prototypically correct you should keep in mind that era III is divided into IIIa and IIIb, the changeover is at abaout 1955/1956 and brought among other changes the following : - no more 3 classes in the trains, only the first and second remained (better to say, 3 became 2 and 2 became 1). - the introduction of the DB cookie - the introduction of the triple headlights (A) from 1957 on
so if your layout shall represent IIIa means : no DB cookies, 2 headlights on locos, class 2 and class 3 for trains. for IIIb : no class 3 coaches, DB cookie, triple headlights
of course these changes were not in place from one day to another and some models of our good mother M don't reflect this exactly, a current example is the new BR 23 (39230) which shall represent the state of 1951 and has 3 headlights.
but most important : what you like to look at is always the best !!!! |

Alfred, thanks for that clarification. I was not aware of all those differences between IIIa and IIIb.
Of course, as you rightly say, they did not change everything on one day, so many trains in the early part of IIIb were seen with and without cookies, etc. It's even more interesting to represent the change-over period, when various combinations were seen together. |
