An OT question: I love this train, but what does "koploper" mean?

This model has a plastic body, I believe. But also the chassis could be plastic, isn't is?

Electric Rail Car Train.H0 - Article-No. 37421

Prototype: Dutch State Railways (NS) four-part electric rail car train. Class ELD4, "Koploper" as Intercity powered rail car train ICM-4 in the current paint and lettering. 1 type mBDk end car, 2nd class, 1 type mB intermediate car, 2nd class, 1 type A intermediate car, 1st class, 1 type sBFk end car, 2nd class.

Model: The train is the four-part version. The powered end car has a die-cast frame. The train has an mfx decoder. The train has a 5-pole can motor with a skewed armature and a flywheel, and a sound effects generator. The engineer's cabs in both end cars have interior details. 2 axles in one truck powered. Traction tires. The train has power pickup in the end car at the front of the train; the power pickup changes with the direction of the train. The train has special close couplers with a guide mechanism. The train has factory-installed interior lighting. Prototypical light yellow LEDs are used for the headlights. Warm white LEDs are used for the interior lighting. The interior details vary with the type of car. The headlights, dual red marker lights, and the interior lighting can be controlled digitally. The construction of the running gear and the bodies is detailed. There is a representation of the "Scharffenberg" coupler with a cover on the end cars. A rigid drawbar coupling is included for multiple unit operation. The end cars come from the factory with closed crossover doors. A plug-in part included with the train makes it possible to represent swinging doors with a diaphragm pushed to the side on one end car. Total train length 114.8 cm / 45-3/16".

Highlights:
• Factory-installed interior lighting.

The "Koploper" In the mid-Seventies, the Dutch State Railways needed new material to modernize its express passenger service. Trains with flexible utilization are required in this densely populated country in order to manage service in the urban areas. As a result, from 1977 to 1994, a total of 144 powered rail cars, the "Koploper" family, were placed into service. These powered rail cars could be quickly and easily separated and coupled at stops. It also became important that passengers be able to change from one unit to the other, when the train was in motion. The engineer's cabs were thus quickly raised up one level and these powered rail cars were equipped with crossovers at the ends. This feature gives the "Koplopers" a brawny, unusual look. The "Koplopers" were built by the firms Talbot, CEM Oerlikon, and Holec, and were designated by the Dutch State Railways as the classes 4000 and 4200, which differed from one another in their motors. A short while ago the "Koplopers" underwent modernization and were equipped with air conditioning and facilities for handicapped people. These powered rail cars can reach 160 km/h / 100 mph and are run in the classic NS paint scheme, but they have also been used as advertising surfaces such as for the Olympic Games in 2008 in Beijing. The "Koplopers" are certainly a successful development in rail vehicle technology and with their unusual looks they are clearly leaving their stamp on passenger service in the Netherlands.

Secretly ordered one in Amsterdam ????

I'm curious as to how many Dutch modellers will sign up for this, because we still have not seen the Olympic Koploper[:(]

We are beginning to wonder which comes first the Koploper, or the next Olympics?[:o)]

Certainly I would not want to order yet another when Marklin still fails to deliver the previous one. [xx(]

Perhaps what they mean by "goal" is they actually aim to produce this one? Is this a good theory?

I was of course, referring to the model, not the prototype.

Hi Guys,
Yesterday Friday 4th december 2009 my wife and i travelled by train from Rotterdam to Groningen,and back on the same day,to see my father who is in hospital in Groningen.
On this line,the Koploper traintype is used as standard equipment all the way.
Both in the morning as well as in the evening,we were lucky enough to travel in the upgraded refurbished units,first class compartments have red leather seats and white walls.
Must say the ride in the 1st class was very comfortable and smooth,the seats are perfect and there is a lot of room for long legs,it almost feels like you are in the Business Class of a plane.
On the way back to Rotterdam,NS coupled at least three 4-unit trains together,one of which was the Olympic version in white/orange/blue.
I can not tell for sure how many units were coupled,we were a bit in a hurry to catch this train,also the front units were having destination Rotterdam,the back units were having destination The Hague,to be uncoupled in Utrecht.
The train was very crowed,with even in 1st class people having to sit on the floor near the entry doors.
It happens to be that Groningen is an university city,a lot of students travel home on Friday nights to bring their dirty laundry to mum!
All in all a very enjoyable day in the Koploper type,i might as well purchase the Marklin Olympic Koploper when it comes out,someday....
Saterday next we will travel again to Groningen,again in koplopers,i suppose.
Currently NS have a special discount deal till end December 2009: Herfsttoer (Autumntrip),two persons can travel all day over the entire network in FIRST CLASS coaches for only Euro 39.50 !!!!!
Only restriction on weekdays is that you cannot travel that way prior to 0900 hrs AM,this restriction is not applicable in weekends,i reckon this must be the deal of the year,great offer!
My father (75) is slowly recovering from a stomach bleeding,outcome just a bit uncertain.

Märklin NL says that there is a better qualitycontrol by Märklin. The Koploper Olympia comes at the beginning of 2010.

My dealer, Märklinstore Amsterdam, said that there was a person from Barbados, who saw the Koploper on a forum and ordered one. Is that you Jeremy?

I learnt fron another Forum that the "koploper" 37421.X modell is being made by a subcontracter in China named "Sanda Kan".

Sanda Kan has been producing for Lionel and Hornby in the past as well.

Sanda Kan is the biggest Model Train Subcontractor/Manufacturer in China and approx 15 months
ago were purchased by Kader Manufacturing Trust who own:
Bachmann, Williams, Bachmann Branchline, Graham Farish,
Liliput and Bachmann China brands and manufactures
products for them at its facility in China’s Guandong province.

Sanda Kan, also based in Hong Kong, manufactures model trains
and accessories at several facilities in mainland China
and has made items for Athearn, Atlas, Hornby, Life-Like,
Lionel, Marklin, and Walthers, among others.

Remember it was not too long ago that he claimed that nothing from Maerklin was made in China

My new 36743 Belgium steamer arrived last week. On it is a sticker that says "Made in China". Cleary some production is happening in China. On the other hand, my 36601 BLS lok was "Made in Hungary".

I was in Amsterdam last weekend and saw one of these (Olympic) in the Marklin shop there. Wonderful paint job...well worth the wait for anyone wanting one of these!

Also in USof A. Nigel and I bought our sets together at the Marklin store in Utrecht.
