Hi friends:

WOW - my dealer just presented me with a nice gift: LGB's 2006 catalog - 400 pages full of trains [:p]
Actually, it's no simple catalog. I's a big, glossy hardcover book - celebrating 125 years of LGB Smile
He said those are the very best trains for garden layouts and outdoor playing.
Assured me I could even run my car over their super-sturdy brass track without any trouble.
Also stated M is surely the top maker of indoor MRR. But for the outdoors it's LGB. Must give it a try ...

Ron: LGB states there's no problem running them outdoors - even in the rain and in the snow Smile
This could be a completely new dimension of MRR ...

I was just speculating on the lack of space in Brooklyn relative to Texas (where EVERYTHING is big!)

I have thought of getting some garder railroad stuff (I have plenty of space..1.5 acres), but have a fundamental problem with leaving things aout in the rain!

Me, too. But leaving only some track outa there gives me no headache.
However, I'm still at my planning stages so there's nothing ever lost ...
This is new territory for me, and Juhan's report is just great and inspiring Smile
But how about durability of locos and cars ?
And are there any other G-Scale makers besides LGB and BACHMANN ?

Thanks for your advice,
John

Sure John, Märklin! biggrin Having seen the pictures of your layout, and your interest in details,
I don't think you will be satisfied at all with LGB.

Have a look around here: http://www.spur-1-freunde.de/bildergalerie.html

I hope to get the time soon, to write and picture some of the different track types in 1-gauge.

Hi John, I thought by now you would have ordered the "mother of all gators" for your collection: (55562)

UserPostedImage

Well the bug has bitten for me and since Marklin had those great discounts on some of the I-gauge stuff last year, I am now getting into gauge I. 3 locos now and the croc is ordered.
Another heavy year of train spending.[:I][:I]

Thanks for your help and advice, friends Smile
Guus - <u>it was</u> that bargain #54309 ACL F7 at Screen Shop that triggered it all ...

BUT: When talking to my M dealer he advised me for generally NOT running
precious €2,000 Marklins out in the garden - where it's wet and dusty ... [xx(]
He also said M's track may not really be suited for the outdoors.
And it would break my heart to see a beautyful M Gator out in the dirt.
If I ever owned such juwel [:p] - she'd never leave my train room !!!
Last not least - my wallet definitely won't stand $$$$ Marklins.

That's why I'm taking a long look at those cheap €200 plastic trains ...
Perfectly right for the outdoors. And for the Grandkids. And for the dogs.
Again - anyone w/ long-term experience re <u>LGB and BACHMANN</u>, please ?

John

Sorry John -I guess I was getting a bit carried away with my enthusiasm for the Markiln 1 Gauge for a garden scene - Good luck with your LGB pursuit - I am sure they will run just fine!!

A garden layout is a dream of mine!![:p] - One day with a bit of luck - for now I will have to stick with a large indoor, Temporary floor layout:[:p]

Hi John,
I have rather extensive experience with one gauge and here are some of my opinions:

1: LGB (or at least their German made stuff) makes some of the highest quality trains on the market today is not the best (and yes guys I regret to admit I include Marklin when I say that)While costly it is worth every penny and their US distributer is fantastic as far as pricing, stocking items, and delivery. Their track is also my favorite.

2: USA trains- These are American prototypes and a major bargain. While not quite as sturdy as LGB (or European built) they are better detailed and are very durable. I know many people who use solely USA trains equipment on LGB track for their layouts. I would avoid their track though as it is not the best system.

3: Aristo- Craft: While their rolling stock might suit your personal taste better (I know you like the old timers) their quality is good but not at a LGB or USA trains level. Their track system is great, I would use it if LGB didn't cover my particular layout needs

4: Bachman: This stuff is garbage, cannot hold up outdoors and is really just terrible, the epitome of Bachman's stereotype. I'd avoid it at any cost.

5: Marklin biggrin Great Stuff, think their HO Only Bigger. The only thing I would point out as a negative (and why I prefer LGB in this scale) is the high costs and that they design their trains for AC while everyone elses are DC. Yes the Marklin locos can run on DC but you can't really start with a Marklin setup. Track is also really expensive.

6: AccuCraft- They are another favorite of mine. They are brass (read: expensive) but they are dirt cheap compared to any other brass and are a really great company, both in product and service (local here in the bay area) Plus everything they do is usually available in live steam as well as electric!

I just wrote a lot more than I thought I would so I'll stop now but thats by .02 Euro!

Well, LGB got even an €4,000.- [:0]!!! GG-1 in their long line of OD trains ...

However, I'll enjoy my outdoor adventures biggrin rather with one of their more affordable starter sets:
Cute little Steamers with lights & smoke (one even with sound!), 2 cars, brass track, transformer
And with a modest €240 price tag each of those sets is a real bargain [:p][:p][:p]

Nice PLAYMOBIL train, Guus - thanks for showing. Well, I guess when the Grandkids grow older
such most simple toys (the other end of the spectrum) will only draw dust in the attic.
But I'd take their surplus LGB stuff any day ... biggrin

Hi Again,
That GG-1 Is brass and made by Aster for LGB, hence the price tag. Not that this is cheap but most LGB locomotive cap out at $1000. For the price I would look at USA trains if I were you.

Very true, John. I am a dedicated HO buff, but always admire the big stuff when I'm in the train store. One of these days, maybe, I'll give into that temptation. My grandson is attracted to them also. Maybe I need to take him to more stores so he can say "Buy that, Pop-pop!" How could I resist?

Since the weather isn't really for laying track in the garden I'm planning to integrate an additional
G-Scale test ovale into my HO-layout, somehow ... it could sit at the bottom of the layout construction
(where "normal" people got their shadow station) Any complaints ? [:o)]
I hope no one visits a poor Southener's layout in Brooklyn. Intruders beware of Gators.

Per - seems your paper mixed things up a bit. His Dad was with the NYPD -
but Lou became a Reserve Deputy at LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE, now ... Smile
Nevertheless, though he's my age I'd <u>never</u> make him angry. That's for sure biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Thanks for your great pictures - cool !!! Your loco collection ?

Nothing to ride home about, Per wink And a nice collection you got there, congratulations !!!

Well, a few days in thinking mode can bring up amazing results. There's not only fun with garden MRR -
but also a few disadvantages = WORK (something to think about BEFORE you buy all that stuff [8)]):

1) May be your trains are weather-proof - but becoming older are you still willing to be such, too ??

2) If permanently out in the garden this G-Scale stuff will draw ALL kinds of dirt on a regular basis -
are you willing to clean those looong tracks, on a regular basis, on your knees ??
Surely, there are cleaning-cars (and even $$$ cleaning-locos) - but nothing beats cleaning by hand.

3) What about your lawn mower - are you really willing to LIFT that beast over the tracks, constantly ??

So if you aren't the lucky owner of a Wintergarten perhaps a small "carpet-layout" Smile is best for outdoor MRR

No problems ?????? Neville, you're invited biggrinbiggrinbiggrin to do this in Old Unca Norman's garden
(He's a retired FBI - but still damn good with his trusty .45 Thompson sub ... [:o)])

So what. Again, I guess my best solution is a simple starter set plus some extra track for a
"carpet layout" in the garden or on the terrace. And total investment is about €300.- only
(also, I'd neglect my beloved HO-Marklins with too much of that G-stuff ...)

Must be nice to enjoy a summer day in the garden, with your lady, a book, cold beer and a T-bone
- watching the puffing little Stainz from 1892 go by [:p]

I confess - I deeply fell in love with that cute lil' steamer ... Smile
Even in analog mode she got engine sounds & smoke !!!

But your Brother-in-Law is very lucky ...

Don't tell wife! biggrin

John: making an outdoor carpet layout is quite difficult, you must have
good support for your tracks, otherwise de-railings will occur.
An other thing not mentioned here, is the difference in the size of the flanges on the wheels.
LGB have larger flanges than Märklin ( and many others ), so LGB do not run on Märklin track,
and Märklin trains don't run well on LGB turnouts.
PECO has some tracks and turnouts, very nice, with life-long guarantee,
even when used outdoor. Their turnouts have a little plate, which you can take of, if you want to
drive LGB, and leave on if you run Märklin. PECO have only made 3 1-scale items, 90cm flexible
track, left turnout and right turnout. ( + small parts accessories ). Only negative thing for me is the
radius, 10 feet, a little too big for indoor in my house.

Per: It was <u>she</u> who selected that loco ... [:o)]
May be. But other brands give me not the slightest trouble. Since I'll run LGB trains on LGB track Cool
