I will be in Rome with my wife sometime in October for a romantic trip. Knowing my obsession for M* she asked me to locate right upfront any M* shops in the city so that I can spend sometime there when she is out for shopping. Are there any Maerklin shops? Any directions will be very much appreciated.

Hi Symeon,
there are a couple of shops in Rome, one is close to the Vatican, but unfortunately prices are higher than in Goeppingen itself, you may find an offer, but you have to be rather lucky, in our group of modelrailroders we reference it as "The jewelry"biggrinbiggrinbiggrin
If it's the 11th there is a swap meet, it's a bit out of the turistic area, but could be interesting.
Just send me a PM if you want to know more.

Hi Alessandro,

Thank you very much. Actually I can find no information on the internet about these shops in Rome. Is it because they are old-fashioned and do not have internet access? Where are these shops located (which area of the city). My wife has already found her way for shopping in McArthur-Glen so I feel a bit disappointed that I can not yet find mine in Maerklin shops.
Anyhow my trip will be around 23.10.08 so unluckily I will miss the meeting. However I would love to acquire some representative Maerklin rail-stuff of Italy. The jewelery makes no bargaining???

Hello Symeon,

I am not aware of Maerklin dealers in Rome.
What you may be able to do is to look at the other companies
VI Trains, ACME, Rivarossi (Hornby) et al to see if you can find a dealer list for Rome. There's no guarantee that they will have Maerklin, but you may find some interesting items anyways.

www.acmetrains.com
www.vitrains.it (large dealer list)
www.hornby.de (German)

GIORNI MODELISMO
Via Dei Gracchi, 31/33
00192 ROMA Tel. : +39 06 32 17 145

MASTROCINQUE
Via Gela, 33
00182 ROMA Tel. : +39 06 70 16 977

MODEL MARKET 2
Via Goito, 13-15
00185 ROMA Tel. : +39 06 49 40 564

You can also contact the Italian Maerklin fan site to get more info on potential dealers;

Regards and buona vacanza (hope I got that right)

Hi Symeon,
I am afraid Alessandro explained quite well the situation...[xx(]
There are a few other dealers, I just sent you an email.
Do not expect too much: you must be rather lucky to find something interesting...
Ciao

So folks,
First of all my sincere thanks for your good information about M* shops in Rome.
Rome was fantastic, as expected but the situation in regard with M* dealers was a bit hectic. I was expecting better representation of M* in Italy's capital but I guess this is the way that Modelrailroad goes all around the world.
So in summary:
Giorni Modellismo near the Vatican is indeed a jewelry. Unbelievable prices! He is selling VT11.5 (37605) for almost 900 Euro! All the rest were mostly above M* UVP. However he is running a good looking shop. Not much about landscape making though.
Then I went to Baby's Store Modellismo in v. Severano. This was a nice shop with some Italian models but not much of Maerklin. Prices again high but not as much as Giorni's.
My final visit was to L'Aquilotto in Viale Regina Margherita 240. This is a small shop with a friendly owner who however does not speak a single word of English. Thus my visit lasted only for some minutes. His showroom is also very very limited (I could hardly find one or two Maerklin locs there).
I ended up buying nothing from Rome (except a nice BMW 5 series model of Schuko H0 in a toy store somewhere near Piazza Navone)which is quite peculiar for me.
So my overall impression about M* in Rome is disappointing. I believe that Athens has a better representation of M* in terms of variety and prices and I was negatively surprised. Even Barcelona has a far better representation of M* with two very good shops (which I visited last October).
Anyhow, my overall impression of Rome was not even remotely affected by my negative M* experience. Rome is a fantastic city where you feel like you are part of the ancient world. My wife and I had a great time and we really enjoyed there the best capuccino and the best spaggeti we ever tasted (pizzas where not as good as we can find them in Greece though!).

Hi Symeon,
Thanks for the description of your travels, I found it very interesting. Especially the food.
I hope Märklin will be better served sometime.
regards
