After visiting The Netherlands, Thomas the Tank Engine was returned to the Watercress Line in England by a low loader truck. Sadly the hydraulics broke down and Thomas was stucked on a road junction.

For more information, see this article on Mail Online News.

We took our Grandson to Strasburg, PA for a "Day with Thomas" a few years ago. On the way we had to stop at a RR crossing and guess who went by?

Why do they have to ship the real Thomas to and from the Netherlands?
Wouldn't it be cheaper to paint a Dutch loco blue, and put a face on it?

Easy to answer.
It would not be the same.
Kids would recognize the difference immediately. And you would not like to be around if these investigating kids start a "riot"wink

We do have steam locomotives, but only at museum organisations.
The ZLSM in southern Netherlands had hired Thomas.
My favourite is the STAR in northern Netherlands, see —> http://www.stadskanaalrail.nl/star/star.php

The rights to use Thomas and related characters are very tightly controlled, so it may be the case that they didn't have a loco of their own that was acceptable to the copyright holders.

The average "Thomas" is a small industrial tank loco. It really couldn't be hauled that distance on its own wheels due to the speeds involved. These locos were designed to hit 30mph flat out and spend most of their time shunting at far lower speeds.

Interestingly I know of at least one line here that has adopted the lesser-known character "Ivor the Engine" as they don't have to pay big money for the rights to use "Thomas" that way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivor_the_engine

I remember Ivor the Engine, shown on TV programs for kids many years ago.

He had a nice tap for hot tea water.

I would have loved to see a photo of Mr. Topham Hot chewing out the truck driver. Now that would have been a classic!
