Hi All,

Did anyone go to the retirement sale of Stoneleigh Hobby, Inc. in Baltimore, MD? It took place on Saturday, August 16, 2008.

Unfortunately, this information came to me a few days later and I missed it totally. The list of items for sale contained some very nice pieces at 60% discount.

I wish I had known earlier!

Cheers,
Ranjit

The owners were retiring, David. Actually, they were not going out of business.

But, it's gone, David. Too bad!

I am actually interested in the manufacturing, and not in buying and selling.

Just shows that marketing efforts are not what they should be for overseas dealers... A huge marketing failure for a company with an international brand name that has the world as a market... [:(]

Juhan as you say Marklin overseas marketing remains very poor. I would have thought the new owners would have done something about it but the appear to have left this the way it was.
The German market wont be sufficient to keep M going at its present size ( they would like to reduce wage costs now anyway) so to maintain the workforce some expansion would be useful.
I dont know what your dealers are like in Sweden or if they can compete with Lokshop etc.

I don't know which list you saw, but there were a number of items (tracks, accessories, etc.) that I was interested in, Lutz.

Retirement closure is certainly not a measure of 'market presence and client volume'. It happens all the time. We should have known about it earlier either from Marklin direclty or from the store.

Stoneleigh Hobby, Inc. was a Premier Dealer and was awarded the 'Award of Excellence' medal from Marklin in 1994.

These folks, Lowell and Joan, were my local dealers -- 15 minutes away. They are lovely people who had no beef at all with Marklin. They just were tired after 43 years in the same shop (literally). Their wonderful personalities and helpful manner allowed them to survive well into the age of the big box store. Theirs was a quintessential Mom & Pop (literally) hobby shop, and they continued to do well right up until the end. They simply wanted more independence than they had had, tied down to a shop for over 40 years. What is very sad to me personally is, of course, losing an excellent Marklin dealer so close to home, but also the fact that Lowell's was one of a vanishing species, the hobby shop where you could always have a pleasant conversation with the owners and your fellow customers. This is a remnant of my childhood that, I am afraid, my grandchildren will never know in this age of impersonal, internet shopping.
By the way, I snapped up a few of their best locs and other inventory as the prices dropped, though I bought my fair share from Lowell and Joan over the years at UVP (list).
Farewell to good friends of the hobbyist, Lowell and Joan!

Well I guess I am not the only one.
I retired on Feb 1st 2008 and did not find a interested Buyer (if they had a look at the Books say would say no thank's).
For all of you who asked that no one informs the Customer this is not so.
I posted my Sale on this Forum and must say with the exception of 3 or 4 People it was a total bust (I do thank those who did buy from me).
I was not willing to spend any more Money on Newspaper and Internet advertising since it would have been wasted.
Marklin still has not send me all the Club Cars and Warranty replacements which are owed to me and my Customer (8 Month to wait to finally close the Books is a long time).

P.S. Just a Note for Mr.Hemmerich when I closed the Store I had a Marklin Stock of over US$ 30,000.00 (I just hate it when someone be littles a Lifelong Marklin Dealer)

I recall having posted here on this very Forum (three Years or so ago) if you do not support your Local Dealers they will disappear.

Sad to say that this exactly what is happening now (whether it is Marklins or the Dealers fault you decide).

Thanks for letting us know, Fred and Martin.

It is really sad to see a store close after so many years. The friendship, the store ambiance, the informal chats with other customers is gone.

Sure, Martin, support of your local Marklin dealer is crucial. Unfortunately, in my case. I have no dealers in the vicinity. My weekends are boring to say the least.

I am glad you got what you wanted from Stoneleigh Hobby, Inc., Fred.

Cheers,
Ranjit

This quote would be valid for communities which have a dealer close by, but there are also many people who are at a disadvantage when it comes to finding a local dealer like me since the closest one is about 900KM away so I would have to order over the internet no matter what and I littlerally shop from certain dealers who I get in my view good services and fair pricing.

What could that have been - other than 250A's, 6080 decoders, etc? biggrin

No more than just about 4 HO locos left in the final sales offer (ok, with "reasonable" prices). [xx(]

BTW: Ranjit, how do you plan to stop this quite common retirement closure epidemic by your "new Marklein company"? confused

PS: If a shop closes down and it's only known after the fact, this tells alot about its market presence and client volume. wink

Lutz,

Nothing is going to stop a store owner from retiring. It has nothing to do with Maerklin, it has to do with personal priorities and the amount of time that can be devoted to the venture.
I am sure that if they could have found a buyer, they would have sold the business and left it in the new owner's hands.
Unfortunately, many of these local Maerklin dealing hobby shops are in areas with significant German, Austrian or Swiss populations. These mom and pop ventures have stayed with the program much longer than the ones in the big cities.
The sad reality is that even Toys R Us may be getting out of the toys business. At first, they were putting Toy Stores out of business, because the smaller stores could not match the prices on the Cabbage Patch Kids, Nintendos and whatever other trendy toys were on the market. Now, even Toy R Us is having a hard time competing with Wall Mart for Play Stations and the last generation Nintendo.
Your view is coloured by the fact that you are in Germany, where Moba Shops are still pretty common. In fact, there used to be one on each corner, like Starbucks.

Since the list was revised as the sale went on, no wonder you did not find much interesting stuff. I remember ordering some freight cars from Stoneleigh a few years back, after Marklin's website listed them having the item in stock.

As far as their liquidation of stock. I am sure that they posted the info on their website, emailed and mailed their clients.

As the former salesperson in charge of Maerklin and European Trains at our former local dealer, I know what it is like to clear out an inventory. When my boss closed his store, he asked me to help with selling off the Maerklin. We sold the sets to another dealer and sold most of the individual items to our customers.

Since then, our other local dealer passed away, and I am still working with his daughter to liquidate his collection when she decides to proceed.

All of which leaves me with NO local dealer, so be happy about where you are and stop criticizing everybody else.

Regards

Mike C

Bob he is unable to tell us about the new CS. If you are looking for technical knowledge we have Lars and others who will give you a completely unbiased view.

Mike as you say local dealers are getting fewer which is a great pity. These days nobody will purchase a toy or model shop and even worse I have not seen any new ventures start up.

Martin Your comments here are always welcome and we know you did your best to keep the store going. Hope you are enjoying retirement.

Sorry Mike. You are of course the exception. From what I hear from members on the forum you give a great service and as I think I have said if it wasnt for the extra 25% on to the price from the USA I would be buying from you as well.
I do hope you are doing well and the present economic situation is not having an adverse effect on business.

Unfortunately for your outlook, Lutz, my nearest Märklin dealer has his prices for Märklin products quite a bit higher than I would want to pay just to keep him in business. He does have reasonable prices on other things I need, so I buy almost all my Woodlands and other scenery things there, but no Märklin. If that causes him to drop the line, I guess that is his decision. Another dealer not really close but on the way to several of my customers is also quite pricey. Fortunately I now have an "almost" local dealer (about 2 hours away) whose Märklin prices are competitive and whose service is great (our friend Mike). I am doing my best to help him succeed. Smile

Spot on post Fred.
Lovely sentiments as well.

This is the reason why I support our local dealer (albeit in the South Island)and I am prepared to wait for my orders. (The lack of supply from M* v orders is another but relevant issue of course).
A young family interest making the most of their passion and doing their level best to give great service.
That is why I am quite prepared to order through them and wait.
They attempt to have their pricing as near as possible to European prices.

Martin, I appreciated your comments as well.
Both postings reflected your points of view perfectly.

My nearest Marklin dealer is 180 miles from my home. It's kinda expensive to drive that far for a piece of track, and he might not have it anyway.

They're good guys, however, and the model shop is right across the street from the main UP terminal and RR shop in Roseville, CA. A lot of RR guys come in there after work.

All my closest local shops carry 2R only since that's mostly what they sell in the good O US of A.

So I do a lot of mail order these days for Marklin stuff. But when I do get to the Roseville shop it's a real treat.

The Roseville yards are in a lot of paintings and photos of locos waiting to go over the high Sierras to the east. Often, 5 locos are needed for the trip over the hill. It was really quie a sight when steam was still in use. Imagine five steam locos pulling and pushing on their way up over the grade.

Cheers, Bob

Hi Lutz,

There were a number of tracks (K + C), bridge accessories, some signals, etc. that I was interested in.

Why do you call it 'retirement closure flu'? This is certainly not a flu. Surely, we are all going to retire someday. Looking at our ages, it could happen anyday!

I am sure after 43 years, Lowell and Joan would have informed Marklin, and all their customers and alliances of the closure. It is just that members in this forum did not know about it.

Cheers,
Ranjit

All,

Here's an anecdote about Stoneleigh that I thought you all would enjoy:
The shop was in a quite old strip of shops in what was, when it was built, a suburban location. There was a bowling alley beneath it, so conversations were often punctuated by the rumble and crash of bowling balls smashing into pins beneath one's feet. It was not annoying -- just the opposite, in fact. I guess you could call it endearing, in a quirky kind of way.
Another complication was posed by the fact that there were apartments above the shops, rented out to various tenants. Unfortunately, the plumbing in the apartment above the hobby shop was not very modern, and not in the best of repair. The result was that, whenever the upstairs tenant decided to take a bath, water would leak out of the pipes above and into Lowell's store. Lowell and Joan would form a bucket brigade with practiced efficiency. The good news was that the tenant only took a bath once a week. The bad news was that it was on Saturday afternoon, when the store was at its busiest.
Memories like that don't get listed on EBay.

Interesting store, Fred!

I like the bit about the tenant taking a bath once a week, and how Lowell and Joan managed the leaks!

Hey Lutz, if you've been up the Feather River to Quincy you've seen paradise from a train. It's really beautiful and reminds me somewhat of my train rides through Switzerland, Southern Germany/Bavaria and Austria/Northern Italy.

Those locos work so hard to go over the passes. I saw that during the steam era too and I'll never forget it. I believe it was Western Pacific then, but I'm not sure. Maybe someone on here could correct that if I'm wrong.

Another great trip was up the Southern Pacific to Portland. That was the orange painted Daylight train. I remember having it stalled by snow in the high Cascdes in Oregon. A rescue train with a snowplow came to get us going again after about 12 hours. Now it's an Amtrak twice daily trip. Due to increased train travel it's quite long now with as many as 12-15 cars.

Another nice trip is the Amtrak route from San Diego through Santa Barbara to the central coast along the Pacific. It gets about 2 million riders a year now.

They still bring a Challenger steamer down from Portland to the Sacramento train fair every couple years. People line the tracks for hundreds of miles to get a look. Quite a sight. UP stops all their trains for a while to give it the ride away. I think they own it.
