Never hurts to have a celebrity or two to raise the profile of your cause. If Bono can do it for Global Warming and Bob Geldof for World Poverty, why not have PC and RS raise the awareness of Model Railroading. More power to us I say......biggrin

Just wonder what kind of model trains that Collins and Stewart are into. I hope at least one of them is doing, oh, Marklin. Cool

Troy hi,

As far as I know Stewart is building a generic "American City". I saw photos from his layout - looks nice and big.

Elton John is a big fan and have a huge (and this means HUGE) layout - rumours have it that he have tracks in all the rooms of his castle.

Did you know that Neil Young is (or was) the co-owner of Lionel trains?

Interesting that R. Stewart is into U.S. stuff.

Yes. Neil Young is such a Lionel fanatic that he bought part of the company. [:I]

Well done Henrik!

In the small writing under the photo (follow the link above) it says:

Phil Collins looks like a serious gentleman ... and he takes his Märlin seriously.

I found this list of celebrity Model Railroaders - http://boldts.net/TrainsCelebs.shtml among whom Ricardo Patrese, a former F1 race driver, collects Märklin, as did Hermann Göring, as mentioned in this article - http://music.guardian.co...story/0,,2198507,00.html

Cool.... That means that Phil could be one of our forum members... (Actually he must be as this IS the best Marklin forum!) Hey there Phil - we love your music down here... It's a shame that Sir Elton John does not have Marklin - how could you be the Queen's knight and run German trains??? I wonder if the Bee Gees do trains - that would really make my week.. Smile

Rod Stewart's layout is the main feature in the December 2007 Model Railroader. It's 23' x 124', with a mainline run of 900'! It's based on North American protypes and is set in a generic "big city", but doesn't seek to represent any railroad or locality in particular.

I always remember reading Adolf Galland's 'The First and the Last'.
And how absolutely disgusted he was with Göring when shown the extensive layout in Karinhall, when summoned there for some R&R.
He left very soon after.

Edit: I have seen pictures of part of the layout on the floor of a large room c/w signals.
But I can't remember where I saw them.

Was Goring's layout Marklin? I've seen a photo too, and like Macca don't recall where.

It is in one of Life-Time's WWII book series. I remember the layout in the picture was O gauge 3-rail.

maybe Galland was more disgusted by Goring's painted finger nails, than the trains.

I read a brief snippet in a magazine a few years ago about Goering's collection. Apparently all the stock was packed with the rest of his luggage during his escape from the advancing Red Army. After his eventual surrender the models were reportedly sold off via charity shops, or taken as souvenirs. So there's every chance that a few attics out there hold surviving parts of the collection. That said, I'm not sure the current owners would want to know the history of what they've always taken to be something their Grandfather brought back from the war.

I am in agreement that from photos that I have seen in historic literature from TRIX, he was fascinated with TRIX Express. I have a photo of him standing next to a TRIX Express layout. Maybe he collected Maerklin also??

I am not sure we are in such good company all the same!!

On my Maerklin layout, every time something goes wrong that I cannot explain (which does not happen very often) I attribute it to one of the Preiser figures I have of this fat guy which resembles Herman Goering. Some of you might also have Herman on your layouts. It is totally clear that he comes alive sometimes at night and causes havoc on a layout. Watch out. Beware of the little fat guy.

I guess it is rather ironic that Goering enjoyed TRIX Express considering the Bing Family who "invented" it were Jewish. However, they were forced to sell their business in 1938 as Jews were no longer allowed to own any businesses in Nazi Germany. Suffice to say that relationships between British TRIX and German TRIX did survive during WW II. Then again it was a unique system for its time and I am not surprised that an old Luftwaffe pilot would not have enjoyed the most recent model technologies of his day!!

I do agree Dr. Dirt that in this Forum "We are in good company."
