I recently completed my first High Speed train trip. It was in S.Korea and I had a good time with it. I took several pictures of the train and have been told that the TGV Atlantique is the closest model produced. I plan to get one and paint it in Korail colors and the only one I see in 3 rail AC is the Mehano version. Does anyone have recommendations on their product?

Thomas,

TGV Atlantique is a Hobby level product from Mehano.
It performs well and looks impressive, especially when
extended with extra car set(s). It takes R1 curves without
problems (unlike Mehano's 8 part ICE train) and it will
provide you with inexpensive modern speed train for your
M* layout.

Thanks the one I was looking at says it's a prestige line, do you know the difference between hobyline and prestige line? Also I will get the digital version but am wondering if sound is worth an extra $70 any sage advice here?

Mehano's ALSTOM THALYS is found in Prestige line, while TGV Atlantique is in HOBBY line of products. Frankly, after testing both,
I can't say that one is more detailed and/or a better performer than
the other. They both are fine models. Mehano's diesels from Prestige collection in general are excellent models with superb detailing and sound. And speaking of sound - whether it is worth $70 or not it is in the eye... I mean in the ear of a beholder Smile

I think that the only real difference is that the Thalys and Duplex have cab inserts (seats) and the other TGV sets do not. Mehano uses the same chassis for all of these sets. The car molds are the same for the Thalys/Atlanique/AVE.

Hi: I have the Mehano TGV Duplex, and find it to be quite nice; it operates great. I have it with sound, and the sound is worth it. It has an ESU Loksound decoder, and they have sounds appropriate to the TGV operation like the bell, the funny TGV horn, and all the motor and breaking sounds. However, the sound that we like the most (although it is perhaps also the cheesiest of the sounds) is the French departure announcement. It begins with the SNCF announcement tones, and has a barely understandable departure announcement in a very distinct French accent. However, for those of us who have taken SNCF before, it is makes us grin in recognition.--MM

I'm guessing that since I'm going to model this train as a Korail KTX, having them speak French, (even if unintelligible) makes it less attractive to go for the expense of the sound. Maybe I'll just but all the cars instead.

I just ordered the new Mehano Duplex center cars today. They are finally available after a wait of about three years. I also ordered the Loksound with the TGV sounds. I plan to put it in one of my AC Lima TGV's that will soon go Digital AC.

Well, the last time I was supposed to take a TGV in France, from Lyon to Geneve, I was driven because of a strike in early 2006. I am happy the model DOES NOT announce a strike!!--MM
