Hi all. I am new to the forum and am looking for some advice.
I haven't had my trains out in about 3 or 4 years in fear my kids would trash them. I decided they were finally big enough to trust with my and my wifes trains in the living room so I started to set up and get conected. In my distracted state with jumping kids I hooked up the red to red between the transformer and 6021 controller [:0].
It turns on but there is no output on the red terminal. Is there any chance it can be repaired? I can't even figure out how to open it without fear of breaking the enclosure. Thanks for any help.

I have no idea what happens if you apply an AC voltage to the digital output of the 6021, but maybe someone else in the forum does.
If you manage to "pop out" the four small white clips on the sides of the 6021, it is possible to carefully open it. I have carfully drilled small holes in mine (1 mm) and inserted a small screw to pull the clips out.
Don't drill too deep! I have no idea about the free space behind the clips. |

Not a good start, Rick. Unless you are really skilled at diagnosing and repairing problems like this, I wouldn't even start to open the case. If you are lucky, you may have blown the output stage which can be replaced. If you fried the logic board, the unit is probably a good doorstop. If you have a reputable Marklin dealer nearby, I would take it in to have him evaluate it or have it evaluated. I would not put a lot of money into it, though. There are 6021's coming up on ebay relatively cheaply since the Marklin faithful have started migrating to the new CS. |

Thanks for replys. Good news, after a calming beer I decided to tinker with it a bit more. I hooked it all up again and all is fine  . I have no idea what was going on earlier. Maybe it was just upset with me for letting it sit for so long  . Me and my two boys are now running the Milwaukee Road through the room, so all ended well.

Welcome to the form, Rick. Good to hear your 6021 is OK. My guess is that the overload protection kicked in when you connected it wrong, and required some time without power to reset it, which is what you have done.

Rick,
I will only add that the protection circuit will work if there is a "good" short. If however, due to resistence in the circuit, the protection circuit took a while to cut in then you may have "stressed" the driver transistors. In such case you may observe some sluggishness as you apply load in the future - multiple trains,accessories etc.
If you encounter this simply replace the 2 transistors - they are bulk standard BDW93C/94C Darlingtons. (Note: insulation from the heat sink is required) |

And thanks for the tip on the transistors. I'm only ran 2 trains last night but I have a box full of stuff I've been collecting over the last few years. I'll have to load it up and see what happens, may as well find out now and get it over with.

Welcome Rick. Your 6021 is a good solid controller and should cope with most shorts.

That's right David, my wife. This all started about 8 years ago when she asked for a train to put around the Xmas tree. I decided to go with Marklin and we have been collectings things here and there ever since. A couple years after our first purchase she recived the Milwaukee Road loco for Xmas and she bought me the 6021. The Milwaukee Road reminds us of back home in Chicago. It nearly run through both our back yards as kids.

I did the same mistake two years ago. After the resetting, it still works as new! So I don't think you should worry!
