Some years ago I sloshed some black water color paint onto some K-Track and I find that the center studs in that area seem to be rusty. I suspect the water base of the paint caused the rust.

1) Have others seen this?

2) Can one prevent this by applying some oil to the studs before painting operations?

3) Do acrylic paints have the same effect?

Earlier I had several pieces of K-track rust heavily on me, for no apparent reason.
Throughout the 4 permanent layouts I have made during the last 20 years, using K-track, I have limited the reasons down to;
"All K-track will rust if they are not dried well after washing/painting them, or if air humidity is >60%."

I still have a trackpieces which has been ballasted with glue-water and then washed with hot water and soap at least three times, before being installed in the current fourth layout, with NO RUST!
-While I have had rails almost never used, but growing rust anyway, for no apparent reason...

I have also noticed that -if they begin to rust, they MUST be removed ASAP, as rust is highly contatious to the adjacent trackpieces! :-(
Especially older track with cupper-tounges will rust, while newer track which uses phosphorized tounges are less prone to it.

Hope this helps...

Regarding if acrylic paints have the same effect; I hope not, as I am currently "sloshing" heavily diluted acrylic paint on my ballasted tracks. Time will tell. How long ago did you apply the water paint?
BTW: I use pure alcohol as wetting agent. I.e. for the ballasting by hand. Works well! <hich>

you might be able to thin with denatured alcohol too.

Hi,

Some time ago I have observed the rust phenomenon on the K track pukos, too. The pukos as well as the base plate (the metal sheet below the ties) are made of steel, and differently from the rails, this is not a stainless steel.

The rust on the pukos occured when I ballasted my tracks with a fine sand which apparently contained some alcalic imgredients. I removed that sand from my layout, and replaced it by a chemically neutral ballasting sand, and the problem has disappeared.

I would suggest to check whether the materials used for ballasting are chemically neutral: the white glue and the washing-up liquid used to fix the ballast, the ballast itself etc., and to replace it with something else if necessary.

Treating the pukos with oil is probably not a good idea, as dust particles will stick there and thus may give rise to contact problems.

Regards

Hans Martin

Edited: BTW no problems here with acrylic paint so far.

well yesterday, before I painted track with black acrylic paint, I added a drop of oil to each puko in my engine shed base...

I will see if I get rust there.

Acrylic paints are water based as fas as I know. Why not use oil based paints. A drop of varnish first should keep rust away.
After all this will the rail still make good contact ?

Could there be some kind of leaking current through the ballast that oxidizes the steel prematurely?

tonight I added a drop of oil to each rusted puko to at least slow down or stop the rust that is there. I am using Merkur/Noch ballast so no glue or acidic stuff is near - the rust occurs only where I painted the track with water colour paint.

I don't think the oil will attract much dirt, and if it does it will be relatively easy to remove.

any suggestion on what I can apply to really stop the rust now that it is present. I really don't want to rip up and replace the track...
