I was first going to use an 12 volt trailer winch but the cheep ones did not have a locking device, which is a must and by the time I added in a battery it was right at the cost of the two cheep Chinese hoist. I got the two on sell for less than $130 it was a Chicago electric Item 44006-9VGA. If you go with a winch watch out for wording like free spooling. it unwinds as soon as the power is cut.

My layout is in my imaginary room. Actually, my layout is imaginary as well =)

Hi Adrian and Darrin,
Here is the link to pictures of the winding mechanisms for my layout, so that it can be lifted above the car space.
It was designed and built by a man who worked as an engineer in a truck factory. It works well.

Well, I have a small layout, but in reality I am the same as you.
My large layout is imaginary, in my head, and it is certainly much bigger and better than the other one. It even has more rolling stock and engines.
