basment of what we call a split level house. The lower story is half below ground level so there are small windows. Lower right windows in this picture:

It is also our TV room and we have our music system there as well.
There used to be a wet bar down there and I ripped that all out and replaced the walls for the train.

Smallest bedroom is declared hobby room in our house. It houses my 4.5 x 1 meter HO layout as well as my little (portable, module alike) 1.2 x 0.6 meter Z layout. Enough space for me to build and play since the HO layout has multiple layers of track. I am also very scenery orientated.

I share this room with my wife for her hobby activities (making clothes, making 3D cards, etc).

Converted loft in to what was supposed to be two bedrooms but ended up as one large train room and a small office. With windows to the rear I can look over the fields and enjoy the peace and quiet.

My layout is in the spare bedroom, and I get lots of grief for that. Being the smallest room in the house, the layout fills up most of the room, to the point that there is no space around the sides and rear for me to get to anything. So, over the top it is if there is a derailment, or whatever. Room size is 3.5m x 3.0m

Size of the layout is 3.4m at the rear, 2.4m on the right side, and 1.5m on the left side (L shaped). You can view it here:- https://www.marklin-user...ault.aspx?g=posts&t=6626

Basements in houses in New Zealand are not a common feature, but they seem to be in most houses in the US, or at least from what I've seen in some of the US house plan books that are on sale here. Many folks here will use part of the garage, or maybe a separate building/shed on the property. I know of one layout that has been built in a basement, some 900 sq ft (90m2). The owner has 2 or 3 more years to go to finish it, then he wants to move to a new house and start again, this time planning allows for a size of 2300 sq ft!!

We don't tend to have lofts either, unless the house has been specifically built with a high pitched roof to make room for a room. I built my house with a 25 degree pitch roof, but that's not high enough to fit another room in. The spare bedroom does back on to the roof cavity over the lounge though, so if I was desperate (nuts!!) enough I could punch some holes in the wall and run track into the ceiling cavity for a hidden station, or whatever. Don't think I'll do that though, the prospect of ever having to pull it out and fix up the holes deters me from doing that.

Hi All,

Great question and what interesting replies. I have a fair amount of
trains and no layout, with a bit of luck and FD acquiescence that
will change in Jan/Feb. We have a a large living/TV room 28'X15'.
A rectangle with those dimensions. I am going to relocate the tv/hifi
area to one of the longer dimensions. The back wall where all that
now is, is 15' but unfortunately has a 3' staircase, so I would have
a long arm of 12' and a short arm running along the side of the
steps of about 8". If I could raise the landing of those steps SmileSmile$'s[:(][:(], I could get a 15' run and use the raised area of the
steps as a tunnel/decorative feature.

I will have to learn how to post piccys here as I will welcome and
NEED all the help I can get.

Peace and love,

Jeremy.
Jeremy.

I got the smallest Bedroom. I has one wall with built in Cupboards and has approx. 2.7 M Square free floor space. So largest layout I could get and still move around was 2.1M X 1.2M.
That is about to change when I become ambidextrous again. to 2.1M X 1.5M and Multi level.

Or I may be allowed to sell a car and move into one half of the Garage and get approx. 3 M X 7 M.

Well, basements in Florida are called "Indoor In-ground Swimming Pools" biggrin so my plywood-bahn (2' x 6' [0.6m x 1.8m] = I love M* Industrie-radius) sits atop a dresser [120cm high] in a spare bedroom. Quite out of the way for SWMBO, quite convenient for moi. With a pair of switches for Inglenook capability, I am a happy boy Smile. Several drawers of the dresser were negotiated for storage of the fleet, and the boxes thereof.

N.B. - the garage is the "above-ground basement" - full of many things, except cars...hm...ah, well Cool

Hi everybody,

I think I am the only one who got his train room apart from where he lives.
Land is so expansive here that I cannot afford a decent spare room for HO. I am using my office as a hobby hideout as I have wind up my business. Lucky I had decided to purchase this unit years ago.
It's of 600 sq ft. I use a room of 12ft x 10ft for my trains, the rest become my wife's studio for Chinese painting.
It's 10 mins driving from my apartment. We usually go there after dinner or on Weekends.
The good thing is we don't have to tidy it up and the entire building is properly guarded.

I know some fans here got a house for this purpose at a much lower cost up north just cross the China border, land was much cheaper once. It's about 30 mins away by train, real train.

Most fans are just collecting, a 4 x 6 spare area is just too hard to find in an average house/apartment.

We decided early on that we needed more space, so the hunt began for a new house suitable for our small family and big railroad.
The choice finally fell on a chain-house (?) with a special accomodation for the basement; It extends out under the entire house AND porch, and adds up to some 72m2.
(Problems with the constructor slowed construction time down to a looong 3 years, during which I had ample time to design my 9 level rail labyrinth)

I set up a plasterwall and cornered in a 9m*3.5m room. Perfectly accomodated for the train; No windows or pipes. Door where I want it. Ventilation and dehumidifier sysem. Wooden IKEA floor and electrical installations specifically for the layout.
Extemely nice place during the hot spanish summers, and not too cold druing the mild winters... (Monitoring of temperature and humidity is in place ;-)
Workshop is set up OUTSIDE the train-room, so no dust enters the room.

I am happy!

Interesting a number of master bedroom layouts. Mine is also in the master bedroom separated by a few decorative woodern screens. In this part of the world, the bedrooms are HUGE so plenty of space for layout, bed, storage, etc etc etc. wink

Ours was planned for the garage (3600 x 3600) but too bloody cold, despite the fact that it has been refurbished and insulated so it will now be in the corner of the lounge / dining room (2800 x 1000).

Working on the FD to reclaim the smallest bedroom (my old study before she moved in - with kids [:(]wink) and I can see the slightest glimmer of light at the end of a very long tunnel [:p][:p]

Large basement for now. But am planning on moving the layout to a 3x3 m bedroom. When the last of 4 kids move out in two years we are moving layout (and ourselves) to a smaller house. Current layout is a u shape and plan is to go multilevel.

Thanks, Steven. You'd think with over 50 locomotives and 175+ cars from 12 different manufacturers spanning 60 years of HO scale I'd find a stopping pointbiggrin but noooo, I gotta have an N scale empire AND a loop of LGB too....and all in about 2 1/2 square meters of space.

The ninth level (160cm) is acually a small return loop inside of an alpine mountain in one end of the layout. The three lowest levels are all subteranian with shadow-stations. (lowest is 60cm)

I occupy our 3rd bedroom, but have to share it with a home office/ironing room/cupboards and a guest bed. An alternative solution would be to build a layout in the attic, but it has a few disadvantages:
1) I would have to climb up a ladder each time. Not to mention the risk of dropping expensive equipment.
2) It is freezing cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Not so good for the equipment either...

Right now I will go for a layout that can be folded against a wall. Parts of the house needs repairs and added insulation anyway, so I will take that opportunity to make room for a layout in some convenient spot.

Of course, for lack of space I have to remove the layout temporarily for the next party (starting in 2 hours). There's always a next party. But that's another story, all written down somewhere in the "Me and my layout" section here.

.. in the garage. My house is small and packed to the rafters with stuff. So the only choice to have a layout of any size (other than moving) was in the garage, and the only way to use that was to go vertical. My 4m x 1m 2 level layout is suspended from the ceiling by two small electric hoist. Usually when I dream up something like this it turns out two complicated or doesn't work as well as planed. But now I don't think I could have it any other way. I can easily walk and work on it form below or set it to eye level or down on saw horses. The car tucks in just under it when at eye level so I don't have to back the car out when I want to run some trains. The hoist shut off automatically just before the mountains go through the celling. I plan to add some insulation to the garage so I can take advantage of the winter months, June through August it will just be too hot to do anything other than collect.

Hi Adrian,
I will attempt to get photos of pulley system, so it looks useful.
Possibly this weekend.
I notice that Darrin T has the same in his garage. Darrin's is motorized, mine is manual.

regards
Kimball

I'll also try to get some photos posted soon. I originally was going to make mine with a manual winch but when I added up all the pulleys brackets and bracing that would be needed, it was over the cost of one cheep electric hoist.

Thanks Darrin and Kimball - I look forward to the photos... I wonder if I could use a 12 volt boat winch? We are starting to explore batteries and solar power at our place - the Government looks like it will run out of water and when the water runs out so does the electricity.. Sigh!
