Hi all, I was just wondering, what exactly does Hobby Series means? I have seen a few items from time to time, but have no idea why those items are marked as Hobby. Please enlighten me. |

Hi Sebastian,
Hobby series is a cllection of entry-level items. Usually not-so-detailed models, and simple waggons. May be even more out of scale than "normal" products and/or items of older date, more or less on teh way out of the program. (or good and prooved product no longer up to standard. Technical, aestethic or otehrwise...) F.ex.; when the C-track appeared, the M-tracks were for some years sold as "Hobby" items... ;-)
Currently this series holds 3 very nice -full metallic- locos. They dont have mfx or fancy motorization. Just a standard fx decoder, basic illumination and usually no sound or other more advanced details. Myself I have the V80, and I consider it VERY GOOD value for money. The price for these locos are around €100.
Also the hobby-series holds goods-waggons of the 44xx. (These models were formerly the "standard" waggons.) Also gimmicks like the small crane with 3 piezo motors, which can now be had including a sound-module waggon.
Some starter-sets are also specially geared towards this segment; Very reduced comuter-trains (for example the Metronome) and ICE with no light-change and no interior lighting.
In general everything that can be considered more directed at children and young persons and/or a reduced budget are labelled "Hobby". This concept equals more or less what other brands (Roco, Piko, Fleischmann) are doing.
Several years ago similar products (and more!) were markedet under the Märklin-rband "Primex". Some of these items are today heavily thought after, and bring in prices at least as good as their "Märklin" branded counterparts! ;-) |

Cheaper than the usual models and therefore not as detailed. Good for kids. Motors also less expensive. Good as an entry level into Marklin.

Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer. |

I think hobby locs will be locs with a fx decoder so not with a mfx decoder.
If the rumour is true Marklin will come with a br50 with a fx decoder. They also come with a br03 set with a fx decoder.

Sebastian, our fellow members have pretty much nailed this topic. In my collection now I have 3 in the Hobby series, purchased with my seven year old son in mind. I have just recently added the 36791 EVB Hercules. I don't know if it's possible to upgrade much on these loks in the future (Lutz will be our resdient expert on that ), but today my son is enjoying playing with them and it keeps him away from my higher priced items.............. at least for now!

Looking closely at M's Hobby program almost everybody will find an item(s) he likes. They are just nice (always been) and can give you the same fun as the more expensive ones |
