In the April/May 2007 Marklin magazine page 20 mention is made of an unnamed cleaning agent for ultrasonic baths which Marklin use for thoroughly cleaning engines of old stubborn oil deposits on axles etc to get as perfect as possible electrical connections after conversions - especially needed now with alzeimers problems.

Does anyone know the name and or make up of this solution and where it could be purchased.

Thanks

Don't be horrified by this but I use Prepsol on the chassis (no plastic parts) & clean with the use of a soft brush or gently with a tooth brush. I must add that any concentrated brushing will cause the paint to come off. So the operation is all done within a minute or so with loco totally submerged & then straight away washed throughly under the hot tap & one can use dish washing liquid to do the final clean up, blow the chassis clean with compressed air & leave in the sun for a while to throughly dry out & the oil the axles & work the oil in by rotating the wheels. Loco chassis comes up like it just came out of the factory.

This sounds quite potent.
At present I use CRC CO Contact cleaner which is safe on plastics and is also in a pressure pack. It does work quite well.
I have an ultra sonic cleaner and thought I could use something a little better in it but not as powerful as prepsol which I may consider for a real dirty loco.

Although I do not have a direct answer to your question,a word of warning though.Ultrasonic cleaning may damage the rotor of your engine.Especially the comutator is vulnerable, which may come loose of its base.

The ultrasonic cleaning is done when the engine is stripped done to the chasis with just the wheels and perhaps driving rods of steamers in place. Also nearly all practical plastic is removed. I totally agree with what you say.

So guys does any one know what marklins secret cleaning solution is ?

Here they sell either the ultrasonic cleaner and the solution, which they say is safe.
You may give it a try: http://www.micro-mark.com/ search for "ultrasonic" on the home page.

I agree that (prepsol) is a drastic step to take but most of the locos I get in for repair are in such a state of disrepair, covered in oil & grime from who knows how many years ago that I find it is the only way to go & start from scratch. The result is however a fantastic transformation. I am intrigued by this ultrasonic method & will follow this topic with avid interest.
