I have a couple layout plans that I wanted to share. I never could find anything that I liked on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Here are a couple designs for a simple layout. I hope it provides some help to someone looking to get started. Most of these designs I came up with using track I already had from starter sets and expansion sets.

Hi, Justin.
I, also, prefer plan #2. I assume since you have tracks overlapping that you are planning two levels. Just a few suggestions. I assume you are using C-track. I have not used the 24630 three way switch, but I have heard of folks who have had problems with it. Secondly, you really only have one loop. If you are going multi-level anyway, you might want to create a second loop so you can run multiple trains. |

I vote for layout 2 also. It seems to offer more variety of operation, enabling you to not get bored from your operations, before you go for the inevitable 5-year major rebuild...

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes you are all correct, the 2nd plan is multi-leveled and it is all with C track. Thanks for the tip about the 3way turnout.

I plan to build a shunting yard in my next expansion. Great site. I bookmarked it. Thanks, Gino. |

I have not had any problems with my 3way turnout. It is motorized and has worked flawlessly. But then again, it doesn't prove anything... |

Kimmo: Glad to hear it. I don't have one, but I have heard from others that they had some reliability problems. I was just passing on a caution. Perhaps it was with the early models or they were installed incorrectly. I had an occasion with a standard C-switch where I had a slight inflection in the subbase causing the switch to flex slightly causing it to hang up. I couldn't even see it, but when I loosened the screws on the adjacent tracks, one branch lifted about 1mm and the switch worked perfectly. |

I've done a little revision work on the 2nd plan. I've added two reversing loops and changed up the shunting area. I'm going to stick with the 3way b/c i've always liked them. I have added colors as well to make it easier to understand. There are 3 distinct levels and the lighter colors are hidden. Also, the large green box in the middle is the Brawa container crane I bought earlier this year.

Hi Justin,
The hidden loop is very similar to what I have on my layout (the part which comes after the brown tracks in your picture above). And my layout is also about the same size as yours. You can see my track plan on my web-site. The link is in my profile.
You might want to consider keeping two parallel tracks all the way, this is where the brown parts meets the white part. This allows one train to go in while another one is coming out. And you can shorten the invisible part, if you want to save some track there. take a look of my track plan, and you know what I mean.
But anyway, you have a great plan for a small space. It is always a challenge. |

You might also want to check the grade into your shunting yard. The line that leads to it also leads to reversing loop under the shunting yard. You want a level grade in the shunting yard so cars not stopped by a puffer or an engine don't roll away. To have the reversing look underneath, it seems to me that the grade would need to be pretty steep leading into it. p. Thanks for all the comments. Kimmo: your layout is a great inspiration and an excellent use of available space. Peter: I could have been in trouble if you hadn't caught that! I hope you all like seeing track plans as much as I do. That's why I keep posting my revisions. I really like the double reversing loops, it will make operation more fun. Also went with the suggestion (from Kimmo) on making the lower rev. loop a double track line into the tunnel. Also added a R3 curve half circle. It is the 3 blue curves on the lower right. That lower section will need to be sloped downward, so I may turn it into a small station. Much smaller than the picture suggests. The town area (in red) will consist mainly of the container terminal and related loading areas and a few small industries, along with the usual homes and shops. I know this isn't very prototipical, but i like it anyway. I looked into the shunting puzzles and may add it later with expansion. That is cool stuff. I also have allowed room to add storage sidings onto the lower reversing loop. The sawmill and rail maintenace expansion sets (#78010 & 78020) will be in soon, and then construction can begin!

I like your layout plan. Don't worry about being prototypical, what's fun for you is all that counts. |
