Remember this picture from the "boxes boxes" thread ???

I am sorry but I had to "borrow" it for a minute, to show you what I wanted to do ....

Because what I wanted to do is to make something similar, because I liked Fransisco's way of assembling the old stuff very very much !!!

One note here: 1960 with predominantely beige / yellowish track boxes. I have no idea why they always seem to come out in a sort of orange ....

I am not a photographer, I am afraid !!!!

Very nice Hans!! Keep those photos coming!!

Something I always wanted to do was get some of those older M boxes, place them on a table similar to a coffee table, and then refinish the table with glass, etc, so the table is always in use and the boxes are always in view! Don't think my wife would like it in our living room but I am sure I could find some room in my basement for such an item! winkwink

1963 and the sky blue period continues, but with all kinds of not so usual boxes ..... I am especially proud I kept the old oil flask box, placed weirdly around the middle ....

Who would keep this ?? Am I mad ?? Well i suppose you lot are not the ones to give unbiased answers .....

Enjoy though !!

The 1964 picture features a selection of my light yellow boxes. If anybody wonders: I collect Märklin stuff from the sixties, not just the boxes .... but I left the stuff inside, I believe more stuff would detract.[}:)][}:)]

Here comes the last one for tonight, and indeed for the whole rest of this year !!!!

1965 features a collage of all colors of boxes I could include. Please note those peculiarities: bridges in the early sixties were dark green, later became sky blue. It is a bit hard to detect, but two equal boxes containing bridges can be seen next to each other, just differing in color. Freight cars were orange / red early sixties, sky blue from 1964. Catenary was yellow, became blue also. There are two dark blue boxes, these will be featured in a later year. Top right there are light kits for passenger cars, old: yellow, then blue from 1964. Signals were red at first, then also blue, which I forgot to include in this picture, but can be seen on the 1963 edition.

I will go away for a couple of days, so I might not be able to answer any questions until next week. Sorry for that. I will definitely do a dark blue pic (1966), a collection of red boxes for freight cars (1967), another one for blue freight car boxes (1968), and maybe some passenger cars, light blue boxes, for the 1969 catalog. Or maybe some locos, as is your wish, maybe, just tell me !!!

Anyway have a peaceful and happy and healthy 2006, and my thoughts are still very much with our poor comrade from Malta, with whom I exchanged posts only hours before his sudden death, and who was the same age as mine. I wish to dedicate this effort of mine to him and his love of Märklin miniature trains !!!

Hans

Lots and lots of boxes its great to see this fine collection. The graphics ofcourse where the best and really showed off the fine quality of Marklin. Its to bad that in this 21 century we get bland generic boxes without somuch as a picture. Even the enclosed material is mostly bland.

The time machine, I returned to the past for a couple of minutes, the same type of boxes of my uncle´s Marklin stuff. Great moments came back again, setting up a layout in rainy days... I´m in this hobby because of him, and his marvelous Marklin, with lots of 60´s and 70´s materials.

Thanks you all, and a Happy New Year...

Hi Hans,

Absolutely beautiful [:p].

Thank you very much for sharing these great pictures with us.
It's amazing how beautiful the artwork on both boxes and catalogues was in those days, especially when you consider there were no sophisticated computer aided design tools.
I'm looking forward to your next postings.

Hans,

You have a truly wonderful collection. How long did it take you to collect all this?

Thank you very much for showing these great pictures to us!

PS: given that we both collect '50s/'60s Märklin and that we both love boxes, we should get together one day so that we can have a talk.

Oscar

Hello all,
I have enjoyed seeing the catalogues and boxes in this thread. I think it would be great if this site gave more info on catalogues and boxes. Perhaps a list of catalogues M has produced with photos of covers would make a very useful sub-section addition to the "Around the Layout" pages. This could be organised by year. Under each year could be an image of the catalogue and perhaps images of some of the boxes from that era.
Hans images could be a start - what do others think? Does the Web Master think it would be too difficult?
I know I have a Web link somewhere to a site that lists all catalogues but can't find it this morning.
Regards, Maurice.

Good Morning Gentlemen !!

This is my New Year's post. I am glad so many of you sent me their appreciation of the old time Märklin boxes collage. Thank you very much for your nice comments !!!!

Concerning Oscar I just want to say that indeed there are a few of us Märklin people collecting and preferring the older items, and meeting up and discussing and enjoying would be great fun. You and me and everybody else interested in these things should get together at some stage to exchange ideas. Anyway my house is open for all of you if for instance you will be in the area visiting the Märklin Museum, which is only 30 minutes from my place.

Concerning Maurice I think that it is better the way it is now. Just leave "us" collectors here, a mix up with the layout section, even in a sub section, would maybe be a bit harsh on those who are only interested in nowadays' affairs. But of course it is up to us to make this collectors' section, which sometimes does not receive a new posting within three weeks, into a more lively place. And I am sure most questions concerning boxes, old locos, cars and tracks and accessoires can and will be answered to the best of everybody's knowledge.

There is indeed a site containing infos on all catalogs, I will send the link to you as soon as I will find it. In the meantime you could easily pay the www.maerklin.de site a visit, all catalogs have been listed there as well, with all cover pictures included.

But please feel free to ask any question you might have, re boxes or catalogs, we will all do our best.

Going back to the topic: I did another version of the 1965 colorful picture and arranged the boxes new, because I was not satisfied with the last one !! Here it goes:

But now on with something new:

The gallery opens this morning with a version of 1966. This ancient [:p][:p][:p] masterpiece is titled "darkblue" and shows boxes of around 1970. This was the time when the boxes still hat the old design with just the new dark blue basic color replacing the sky blue. This only lasted until 1971, when the sometimes so called psychodelic era began ...

1966 by the way was the year when my hometown football club TSV 1860 won its only German Championship ever (I have been waiting since) and therefore it was appropriate to use our club's blue color in this posting !!!

Ok, now the last one for the time being. It is the 1967 catalog surrounded by a lot of red boxes containing freight cars. On the side there are boxes from the do it yourself kits.

These boxes were in use until 1965, They were replaced by the beforementioned sky blue boxes for the freight cars and the construction kits alike.

Now I will take a little break because I will be busy for the next couple of days, so no more pictures right now. But as I said, I will do the 1968 version with the sky blue freight cars, and the 1969 with either passenger car boxes or loco boxes, upon request, some time later this month.

Answering Eric's (2ndChancer) question in the general section right now concerning Märklin's numbering system I found that the link I gave to him has some validity towards your inquiry as well. It is German though, but it helps by listing the catalogs.

Absolutely amazing!!! I wish I lived in Germany, I would come visit you! This is probably the largest collection from this era that I have seen! Do you have anything earlier like from the 50's? I know you said you collect from the sixties, but I am just curious.

This topic has inspired me to start collecting the Marklin catalogs. Right now, I don't have the money to collect everything from each year..so I thought I would do catalogs. I am glad they are still available....I have seen some that go as far back as 1938....
I wonder if you could frame them and hang them on a long wall...that would be an interesting project.

Thanks again!

<br />Absolutely amazing!!! I wish I lived in Germany, I would come visit you! This is probably the largest collection from this era that I have seen! Do you have anything earlier like from the 50's? I know you said you collect from the sixties, but I am just curious.
Thanks for taking the time to take pictures to share with us!

Thank you Bill, and my house is open to you as well as to others if stopping by. You have to come see Germany anyway at some point if you want to seriously get into the finer aspects of this madness ...

I have a few things from the fifties, but not a lot. One has to make sure that the colletion theme is clearly strictly defined. No diversions or 'anything Märklin is ok' attitude allowed. In my case.

My inspiration: reliving and prolonging a very happy childhood, not less but also not more. !!!

Re your question in the other post: framing the catalog covers is an option, but did you know that every now and then a company offers Märklin catalog covers from the fifties on Ebay, larger than the original ones, not expensive and on a cardboard ready to get framed.

Hans
I like M-track and my things that run on it were built between 1959 and 1972.

What a fantastic thread, Hans. I had not seen it before. Do you have anything from 1952? - I only ask this because a member of our Marklin Club collects Marklin items from 1952.
