Some more pictures of my visit in the Efteling.

Behind the carrousel in the Efteling there is a little pearl. It is called the "Diorama", and is a large train layout. It once was created by the artist Anton Pieck, together with Ton van de Ven and a group of craftsmen. It was not builded after a plan, but gradually builded up by the ideas from Anton Pieck. That is also the weak point, specially because the men that maintained the layout aren't also there anymore. I remember it very well as I was a little girl, and I think a little imprint of my nose must still be visible on the window in front of it. I was small enough to walk under the bar in front.
The little train in the background I recognize as a Märklin train, and that one still runs. Although not with wagons except from one, that has a passenger car. The train in front doesn't run anymore, and is larger than HO. Also the river in front that once carried water is dry, very pity for the boats that sailed over it.
I think when you visit the Efteling, you must see it. I wonder how long it will survive, but to be honest, I think it will not for long.

One this side of the layout, high above in the mountains, the train has to turn three times before it will get in the station.

First, I know this layout from the time I was about 4 years old. I especially liked the lightning effects it has including day and night and more impressively: thunderstorms complete with thundersound.

Years ago, by now, I had the chance to have a look behind the scene of this interesting layout. What I saw wasn't that good... The locos originally running on the layout are Märklin Minex ones, unfortunately, not any spare part of those locos is available anymore. As a result: most models are set aside being irrepairably worn out. The scale of the scenery is to be matched with the Minex scale, a regular H0 model does not suit the surroundings as it is way to small.

I've never heard anymore about ideas to restore the old worn-out models and thus I feel sorry for agreeing with Zora that the days left for this layout are counted... [:(]

Bugger! :-(
Well, I think I keep seeing lots of Minex stuff being sold on Ebay. (Havent checked prices though!) -so new locos could be obtained.
In dire straits I would suppose even BR89´s could be used under the hood of those (modified!) Minex shells? -That would certainly make for an unlimited supply of spares! ;-)

You and Sander I guess would have been enchanted by Efteling as young children. There was a beutiful model shop at the end of our steet at Mermaid beach, where we used to holiday at Christmass.
At Christmass the display of products that one had to sell to keep the store viable, was chucked out and there was a beutiful American HO model railway asembled in the window. His pleasure was to give Christmass cheer to the children. The glass in his window was also imprinted with small noses.
That such an incredible piece of art ,such is Efteling is fading with time is very sad.
Efteling will be needed in the future.
If all the little children in Europe that are now big children whacked a franc in here,a penney there;leave room for lira and pieces of eight; could it solve the problem?
Thanks for the beutiful photos and story Zora.
Very cool.

Delightful news: The "Diorama" in "De Efteling" is restored to its former glory. Water is streaming through the rivers, and the watermill is working again. Also some ships are floating through the lakes. All the windmills are working, and the cars on the street. I spotted new trains, people on the station and even a wedding party in front of the church. New trees are added and the landscape is made clean. Certainly I have forgotten to mention all the new things, but you must certainly watch this again. I have made some pictures, and I will post them as soon as I can wink.

It is difficult to take pictures on the night side of the layout, but you will see water in the river and the boat floating. The last time I visited the "Diorama" all the lakes and rivers were dry.

Next time you visit the Diorama pay attention!
Some additions are added by the people who restored the Diorama.
Along the figures added to the Diorama are Red Riding Hood, Holle Bolle Gijs and some others.
The Haunted Castle in the Efteling can also be found at the night site of the Diorama.

I also remember this layout from 30 years ago, being a pupil Marklin collector Smile
This was the thing I wanted to see after visiting the cycle-locomotives.

Specially the uphill track on the video and the weather effects (actually left - right side of the layout) are still in memory.

By now it must be at least 15 years ago since I have seen it.
And since then I wonder about the make/brand....

So it is/was Märklin-Minex (Scale-0)
Mosty era III DB.
