For those who followed this thread a few weeks ago - here is the status as of Feb 19, 2007:
At last, my “lemons” have turned into “lemonade” (at least 2 of them). Some may recall that I had 3 of 5 sound boards with problems – here is an update:
NYC ALCO PA-1 (from 29576) / it was the board – not the speaker. Took 2 months but she is home now and has been trouble-free for about 2 weeks.
BR01 (39010) / returned to Marklin-USA and replaced after about 3 weeks. No indication as to whether it was the electronics or the speaker. No problem for about a week now. This loc has very nice sound effects (when they work) – the steamer operating sounds are – IMHO – better than the mfx Big Boy (which is a great favorite of mine!)
E10 (39120) / this one didn’t fail outright, but has a VERY weak whistle (no volume adjustment via MS), and static and garbling in the station announcement. I haven’t sent it off yet because I am considering installation of an ESU Lok-Sound upgrade.
Other than these 3 irritating electronics items, I would like to stress that all my locs (5 so far – others are VT08.5 and mfx Big Boy) have run beautifully – ZERO problems.

A little speaker with sound waves coming out of it may or may not mean the loc has real sound - it may just be a wheeze we can do without. I think I will try the Lok-sound upgrade. I know it's not a great value but I'm curious. The samples on their website are impressive. On the congrats - thanks - I'm a much happier camper now. |

Glad to hear the two locs made it back to you and in good working order.
If you make the upgrade to the E10 please take pictures and notes. |

That can not be done with the E10 you can not put a esu sound decoder in this loc. Info comes from stummi's forum. If something is not oke sent it back. I also have the br01 the sound is nice. I have 6 steamers with mfx sound. From two the sound has died. I have 10 locs with mfx sound. One was the br50 but that was a not problem I got another one out a another set from my dealer. The other one was the 37974. This loc the BVI has a very special steamloc sound. |

The sound pcb is identical to the Swiss Re4/4-I (#39420). However, the loudspeakers are different. While the Re4/4 has a d20/32 loudspeaker, the E10 has 2xd16/16. The sound of both the signal horn as well as the announcement are remarkable lower in the E10. Just for interest I've tried it with a d28/32 loudspeaker and the result is: loud, crisp and clear! Unfortunately this size ls doesn't fit very well into that loco - at least not w/o modification. About the decoder change: Although you'll need the new 21-pin version - which is announced but IMHO not yet available, due to the larger size of the Sound decoder it does not fit easy into the loco, if at all (the C-Sine connector blocks the proper mounting) and it is not yet assured that the AUX4 output provides the currently needed same C-Sine signal levels.

Lutz,
That speaker you show on the pic looks like a 100 ohm ESU 28mm, not a 8 ohm Märklin 28mm (as found on 37050, 37450 and others), which means that whistle/station announcement board is a relative of a ESU Loksound, maybe? That's interesting....
The standard Märklin whistle PCB (37196 and others) is quite different from what you show in your pic above. That 37196 style PCB uses 8 ohm speakers, the same technology found on previous Märklin sound decoders.
Interestingly, Uhlenbrock's Intellisound also uses 8 ohm speakers.

Hi Luis, well - that was actually what I was expecting when I ordered the part straight from the BR01 spare parts sheet: a 28mm 100Ohm Loudspeaker. But it had 32Ohm instead - why? I simply didn't double check that part number with the current spare parts DB list, which tells the "usual" #508609. So, the spare parts sheet is just incorrect for that item. When I got my new models, I immediately recognized that their loudspeaker part numbers were different ones, as well as the sound pcb; so I measured them and yes, they are 32Ohm. The pcb is indeed a new, smaller design/layout and operates with 32Ohm loudspeakers. Thus if you don't feel happy enough with the volume and "good vibrations" of the 2x16mm ones, you might want to try the one from the Re4/4-I; its part number is #100619. But you'll have to modify the loudspeaker housing part to mount it safely. @Soren: The LokSound length is 30mm vs. 23mm of the LokPilot; width should be the same and thus not matter. It would actually be quite interesting to "enhance" this loco with a (Lok)Sound(-mfx) decoder and thus use the AUX1/AUX2 outputs for such nice features like separate switchable rear and/or cabin lights - and surely they would then also be direction dependent!!! An additional note to the 28mm/32Ohm loudspeaker above: It is for example used in the non-sound BR01 (#39015, which also explains the incorrect spare part sheet for #39010) and will as well be used in the upcoming wonderful blue NS 1200 model (#37121).

Is there a chance that you can give us a simple list of the "great models" other than the Gotthard starter set, so we won't have to waste Marklin's time in ordering me-to models? Hi Gene, Forum, the two other models/sets mentioned by that dealer were the DB era III steamer set #29840 and the SBB Gottardo #39540. Please keep in mind that this is based upon the dealers records. IMHO it is due to his quite attractive preorder price for those items. Another highly demanded model seems to be the 2nd Bellingrodt edition BR45 #37452. Dealers who didn't take full advantage yet of their granted order quantity will probably have hard times getting additional ones. PS: Greetings from a still warm and sunny "Schwabenland" to the San Francisco bay area (which I like almost as much, especially the still less crowded areas).

My friends in Waibligen-Beinstein seem to maintain a good supply of items and prices, but I am still waiting for my little porsche (39835)engine and car sets, along with the NYC mfx set, and a few others. But the items you generously noted will be on order. Another highly demanded model seems to be the 2nd Bellingrodt edition BR45 #37452. Yes, I learned that painful lesson with the 37591 when I wanted to pair them up. And now the NEWS! Just Great!! Just took delivery on 2/24/07 and [:p] Just a quick glance and what a change. The SNCF (39401), new to my stable, and the associated car sets, but the color of the AE 8/14 leaves me wanting. PS: Greetings from a still warm and sunny "Schwabenland" to the San Francisco bay area (which I like almost as much, especially the still less crowded areas). Today our sunshine is in liquid form, much needed for the vines and I also much enjoy "Schwabenland" and its wines.
