I am desperately looking for information about this set. I found out that it came on M's programm in 92/93 but can't find any info such as:
Body and Cover of loc is fully metal?
Equipped with digital decoder? If not is it easy to convert to digital?
Any functions, such as interior lighting or similar?
Type of motor?
General impressions from this model?
I would very much like to know your experience w. this great looking set! Also something I noticed, the loc front has no DB sign. Was that so in the prototype? It looks as something is missing there, compared to the other verions (rot-beige for example).

Hello Symeon,

Not sure that I can answer your question but I did find this on the internet in reference to Marklin 2668.

http://www.nordlandexpre...y_lufthansa-express.html

I have converted a similar set Marklin 2867. I can confirm that the body on that Loco was Plastic and the Motor and Control set up was Analog. I converted it to Digital (my first attempt) and posted some of the conversion here.

https://www.marklin-user...ault.aspx?g=posts&t=4434

Hope this helps in some way.

The 2668 was production in 1992 only and it was digital loco with 6080 decoder.

The 2868 was production in 1992-94 and was analog.

Both are plastic body loco.

After all I withdrew my offer from Ebay. The information you provided was substantial. I would definitely bid till the end of the auction if the 103 was metal but not for a plastic one... no. I only hope that sometime in the future this same set comes up again with some bells and whistles (like interior lighting, sounds, and ofcourse METAL body) so that I can acquire it. And I know that some may say that this was just a limited edition but we all know how these limited editions are after a while coming up again slightly differentiated.
Now watching the fantastic colouring of the touristic E103 (that only ROCO and LIMA if I am righ have in their program) I am thirsty for them...

I bought this set on ebay some time ago. I really didn't care about the plastic housing, I really like the set.

I know you are obsessed with E103, and so do I. I put yesterday an order for the E103 w. touristic lackierung epoche V from ROCO (69740). It looks like a fantastic loco. I will definitely somplete my collection of E103 with the Lufthansa Express but for the time being I couldn't resist to the great look of the touristic 103-220.
BTW do you know if I can put sound on that and if yes what would be your recommendation. I really want to bring these great looking locos to the best standard I can achieve. I operate 6021 by the way.

Yes you can. I have installed a LokSound decoder in another 103, basically the same machine and still plan to do this one. There is plenty of room. LokSound 52463 is the one (or 62463 if you want mfx).

Since you own the 103 LH Express have you noticed if it has the DB logo on the front? I have seen lately one (I don't remember if it's ROCO or another brand) which was carrying the logo but the Maerklin I believe it does not carry it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the M* 103 insider model with the piezo panto was the first metal 103 by M*.

Corrected: The E03 004 of 2001 was the first M* E03/103 with metal body.
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom,

indeed there is some correction needed. The pre-series 103 004 #39573 was offered as first model with metal body in 2001, as MHI product together with those very nice TEE car sets 42990 and 42991.

UserPostedImage

The Insider model 103 137-6 #39579 followed in 2003; complemented with the red 103 201-0 #39572 this year.

Here's a pic of my small collection of those most popular painted 103's. All models have been "enhanced" in one or the other way - including the mounting of new driver cabins (which requires a bit of milling), red rear lights and changed pantografs.

UserPostedImage

Just last Sunday morning I had the unbeatible pleasure to see again the museum engine 103 184-8 pulling a Nostalgic TEE at Stgt-U'Türkheim and rushing through Esslingen. Here a pic of the train on its way back to Stuttgart yesterday (picture provided by Dieter Ebert on DSO).

UserPostedImage

For every DB TEE train fan just a highlight - both in reality and as a model.

Takes me back to the late 70's, early 80's when I used to ride a train just like that between Heidelberg and Frankfurt.
