hi to all,
i just bought a 2 rail loco off ebay by mistake - well the seller knew nothing about this stuff too!
anyway, what should i do: sell it back and buy a new one or convert it to 3 rail?
if you say convert, then please tell me how - he, he, you didn't see this one coming, did you?
thanks,

Hi Cem,
The cost need not be more than about 30 euros for a conversion to digital: a lokpilot and a slider. The work depends on the available room for the slider. I converted a Proto 2000 SD7 loco with some difficulty because of the very limited space under the trucks, but Pierre had more luck with a tender to mount the slider under and a non-traction truck of a Budd railcar. Then Nev is in the process of converting a 2-rail loco with a special thin slider made by Bart (Vardex). You should be able to find more detailed information by searching for the things I mentioned here.
If you do not want a full-fledged digital one I believe you can also use a simple decoder that just functions as a reverser switch, but I am not sure about that. Could be a good investigation to do on such a cheap loco.

Cem, I am in the middle of converting, weel I have investigated and purchased and looked. A little beyound my failing eyesight and thick fingers. Have a look to see if you have enough room to fit a decoder. ESU decoders are about 15mmX30mmx6mm or smaller. Usually enough room to fit. Next room to mount the slider between the bogie. and also sufficient clearance. I was a bit tight in this department. Wiring is the next important. Wires from the wheels are are joined together and then the power from the slider goes to the Positive. That is about it. (I am sending mine away to be done.)[:p] Nev |

well,
i might have changed my mind but the loco is a V190 so there's no space in it for digi conversion.
this one has to go so it seems :(

Cem..are u hardly sure the loco cannot be converted??? I've done 3 loco convertion from 2 rails to 3 rails, even i thought for the first time they cannot be converted because off limited space for slider, decoder etc..etc. Just try it. The hardest thing to do the convertion are putting the slider. Diesel loco sometimes more easy to convert because they have much space. Please, give us some pictures of your loco. And then if you can find solution off your convertion problem..i think Pierre would help you..right Pierre ??? Widi |

hey guys thanks a lot once more! here comes the pictures; they're a bit blurry but hey, you can figure out the score. well the loco is an old (my guess is 60's) Marklin V190 (3065). the space inside is extremely cramped but you would know better than me. any input appreciated. best regards, cem. |

The pickup shoe is replaced by another type of pickup, which takes current from both front and rear wheels (non-geared side). You can remove this pickup and put a normal 7185 shoe. You'll miss the ground pickup from non-geared wheels and face some problems if you have tracks with one isolated rail. It all depends on your ability to keep the wheel contacts when you install the normal pickup shoe. Not an easy task, but it can be done. Your Lok already has a Hamo magnet, so you can install a Lokpilot and it will work pretty well. Remove the diodes currently feeding the light bulbs. Have fun !!! |

Jorge hi, thanks very much for the advice. so as i understand it i will have to: 1) change the pickup-shoe to a 7185 and try to maintain ground connection to non-geared wheels. is that all? also, what is a Lokpilot? one last thing: how to locate the diodes feeding the bulbs? should i send you a photo so you can point to them? thanks again. cem. |

Keeping ground connection from non-geared wheels is not mandatory but recommended when possible. A Lokpilot is an ESU decoder for DC motors. You can select either a Motorola/DCC/Selectrix Lokpilot or an mfx one. When you have your Lok open, you will see a couple diodes instead of the normal reverse switch. If they are not present, don´t mind. You need to have the white wire from decoder directly connected to the front light bulb and the yellow wire to the rear one. Gray and orange wires go to the motor, black to chassis and red to pickup shoe. Isolate blue, green and violet wires. Follow the instructions supplied with the decoder to have it programmed according to your needs. Test your decoder before running it, insert a 47 Ohm resistor in series with the red track wire and see if the lights are working. Also, you'd hear some noise when you increase the speed but probably the Lok won't move. Any direct connection from a decoder's wire to ground will damage the decoder. Have fun!!! |

Cem... Watta wonderfull Loc ..I always like an antic Loc..BTW, you right your loco was from arround the 60'. First thing first is, put the pick-up shoe. From the picture, i guess you can put the slider without "hammering" something. Jorge is right, you just remove the old one then put the new one (M' 7185 or the new Roco 40050). Also, Jorge has explain much about the convertion. The information are nearly the same one, when you try to convert another 2 rails loco to 3-rails..mamybe just a little bit different in other object. But, this is almost and always the same one :install a decoder. Jorge hasexplain about the Lokpilot Here another; You also can use a ROCO 10378 decoder (which is Lenz 930), or Ulhenbrock, or you can buy a decoder from PIKO (which is also a Ulhenbrock one).. Or..if you a Marklin Fan, "really fan" ..you should try install a MFX one..Maybe some guys here can give information about which MFX fit this Loco??? Widi |

Widi The 60922 mfx decoder should fit this loco, if it has a DC motor. Otherwise it's one of the conversion kits with a new motor as well. Price range from 80-100€ for this solution. The 60933 mfx sound decoder gives you a nice diesel sound as well, but the cost will be a bit higher, 150€ (for decoder and speaker, no DC motor). The same decoders are also available from ESU with mfx, but can be harder to find from retailers. |

http://www.all-railroads.com/M10000.htmlhere is an interesting train coming out in the US in 2007 that looks like it might be a nice one. I think they called these things caterpillars because of the appearance and colors. Hopefully it will look nicer than the Concor BN Zephyr/Silver Streak - its all plastic. If it looks good it may just have to become anoth candidate to convert to 3-rail AC/digital.
