I didn't take many pictures worth sharing of the exisitng layout since I was just there in December and repored on that, but they are building two new sections...Swiss Alps and an airport. The airport is just beginning and wasn't worth photographing, but here are a few shots of the coming Swiss Alps. It is interesting to see how they do their substucture.

The alps prove to be interesting, as they are intended to be a link between two stores in the buildings AFAIU. So they now will be allowed to model a mountain which is about 500-1000 m high; not much of an alps, but impressive indoors.

For the moment the whole layout is in one store only, and shop, cafe etc in another. But the layout now needs to grow into another store as well.

Thanks for the pictures Ron. As I understand it, Miniature Wunderland is spread out over more than one floor of the building. Are
there links between floors for the trains, or is each floor a discrete layout on its own? If there are links, how do the trains move from one floor to the next??

Cheers.

Bigdaddynz:

All the trains (so far) are on one floor. The lower floor is the entry/shop/cafeteria/meetingrooms/workspaces. The new section, however, is in the lower floor, so I assume they will hook them together somehow. Major sections on the upper floor are hooked together , some by an overhead bridge and some by tracks that run through the floor (with plexiglass top so you can see them going).

Yes, sorry, floor is the word. I was trying to tell that in the Alps room, the ceiling has been taken away, so a huge mountain is possible, and also, trains going from entry level to top level. But I don't if that exactly the intention, might be ideas in my imagination only.

Thanks for that Guys. I have seen many pictures of Miniature Wunderland, and truly impressive it is. I also have some avi files which I got off the net of TV programs broadcast in Germany about Miniature Wunderland (all in German of course!!). The stuff dreams are made of.

"Tracks Ahead", a US PBS (Public Broadcasting System) show had a feature on MWL recently, also.

To all:

I had the scheduling luck to visit this great layout yesterday. It had been about three years since my last visit. It was wonderful to see the growth of the layout. The American section and Scandanavian sections really turned out great. Also the new entry way/gift shop/cafe are nice. It will be really cool when they finish the new addition. I was surprised, however, to see that most of the new sections use two rail DC whereas the 'old' portion of the layout was three rail AC. For those of you who visit Berlin, I can highly recommend Loxx as well.

They are in the process of constructing an elevator,
here (just off the pic at the right-hand side):

It looks like a 2.5 meter piece of track that moves up to the upper floor (the airport area).
When I visited 2 weeks ago, they were testing the aluminium frame moving up and down, but before I could get my video cam out, the thing got stuck and they spent all day troubleshooting. [V]

Here's the (presumed) elevator construction in the background...

and here is another connection to the top level (top left of the pic below)
The hole in the wall should lead to the old Swiss area.
