I have been doing some research looking for information on the recommended maintenance procedures for locomotives.

Unfortunelty what I have found so far is in bits and pieces.

So I thought that I would start a Topic that consolidates the topic. If this has been done before, then please forgive me.

What I am looking for is:
- What steps do you recommend for maintenance of locomotives?
- Are there certain products that you use (i.e. Marklin oil, Trix oil, ...)?
- Are there certain practices that you would NOT recommend?

Any links to reference sites would also be beneficial.

Thank you in advance for your help.Smile

Very interesting question - unfortunately I have nothing to add, but I'm looking forward to reading answers from more experienced members!

Hi Michael. Newer M locos require very little attention. The instructions that come with the loco will tell your where to oil and Marklin oil is available from dealers.
Less oil is better than too much and keeping the wheels and track clean on a regular basis is really all that is needed.
Also running your locos on a regular basis is a good idea and keeps any oil fluid.
Older M locos require a bit more cleaning around the motor to remove old oil and then just a drop of new oil.
Same goes for coaches and wagons. Clean the wheels and add a drop of oil at the bearings maybe once a year.

There is a service manual available http://www.lctm.info/Biblioteca/Libros/index.htm if that's what you're after?

I haven't yet had the courage to service my loco's (Z gauge) so can't help otherwise, sorry.

Hi, Michael,

a note on locos with worm drive: the new manuals recommend using Trix grease for those, but the old manuals tell you to use oil.

Best advice: never use oil, always use grease for worm drives.

So you should have oil (Märklin, Fleischmann, Roco, Faller, ...) and grease (Trix, Roco, ...) - AFAIK they are all OK (except for some old batches of Märklin oil - called "motor glue"; but that was in an earlier century).
Regards
Tom

For most of the HO Märklin locomotives I have, the user manual says to lubricate after 40 hours of running.
Just one drop on the gears (total, not one per gear), and one drop on the end of the motor shaft (armature).
The Märklin oil is available at your dealer.
For the worm type gear, yes, the Trix grease is probably ideal.

Kimball

David - Is it the LaBelle oil that also designates it is safe to use on plastic?

Thanks

I use Faller oil nr170489
And Trix grease nr 66626.
You need this for SDS engines.
