Zora, this E63 was my first loco which I got from my father when I was 6. Usually it is running on my old layout, but presently it assigned to my new US layout, detecting contact problems on the tracks.

BTW we should think about a very distinguished E63 club. I suppose will find some members here on the forum.

Hans Martin

OK Hans, let's start a mini gator club.
Especially since I own this beauty.

UserPostedImage

Defenition of a mini gator:
— It comes in many colours, but most of the time it is green.
— It has coupling rods.
— The mini gator in non-articulated.
— Of course it has a pantograph.
— It has the ambition to run in Switzerland, but was stucked in Germany.
— It has a long and a short nose.

I am sorry, Zora, but I don't have neither a mini gator nor a large gator ....

Anyway, I really like your restaured locomotive. Very nice !

Very nice farm in the background as well. Is this cardboard ?

No gator here either, doubt I'll get one anytime soon, unless there's a Japanese gator somewhere ;)

Pierre, how about we start the no-gator club? ;)

John: Guess #29215 was a very small production run, for Switzerland only. Koll calls this starter set "Little SBB freight train". But no specific data in his regular catalog -> Koll's Special oughta have more ...

Would that count as a mini gator? Its short nose is VERY short.

Yep, it has a (very) short nose and a long nose. It looks like that there are more variations build by the German railways.
Seems that Märklin did not repeat the trick to make seperate handrails after the first models.
But, this is a very mini gator Smile !

@ Hemmerich,

Sorry, but some models are not qualified. A mini gator must have coupling rods, noses and is not articulated. For the greater gators there is already a fan club on this forum.

I guess my new Seetal fits this category:
[image]http://www.sem-co.com/~rschaffr/trains/images/seetal.jpg[/image]

I also recently bought a 3157 E160 from eBay that would qualify. It is waiting patiently for it's lokpilot.

Zora: Your definition seems a little restrictive. When I put the Seetal next to my E94 or my Be6/8 it sure LOOKS mini! Smile Anyway, my E160 should qualify. I'll try to post a picture tonight.

Thanks, Steven. I may re-take that one. The camera was on a slight angle and with the wide angle effect, it looks like the catenary tower is leaning.

I am sorry, but the larger gators were discussed in this forum, with little attention for the smaller (mini) gators. Hans Martin suggested there were certain more members with a mini gator, so I opened this topic.
See the defention of a mini gator in my first topic.

Hi Zora,

yes, it still has separate handrails (just enlarge the following picture).

UserPostedImage

I totally forgot to add this loco to my previous picture sequence. [:I]

I think I got now what you meant with all your "specs". Smile

The DHG500 (#3044) surely doesn't pass, neither the BLS Tractor (although it has coupling rods) and the EL10 never made it that much south. Ok if the Seethal crocs are classified already as "baby" of the larger gators. biggrin

I bought my 3001 actually more than 30 years ago in a small optometrisc shop in the famous university town of Tübingen (nearby); those kind of stores were still famous in those days to carry Märklin stuff besides their clocks ("fine mechanics"). Unfortunately this shop doesn't exist anymore today, like many others alike.

As a young boy/man I was always fascinated about the E63's heavily shunting around in the Stgt Hbf and spent many hours watching them. The 163 001 was still kept later very well refurbished as a museum case in the BW Rosenstein. A quite nice article about their duty during this time can be found in the EK-Special magazine #32 ("Deutsche Altbau-Elok, Teil 2").

No, if you read the post from Hemmerich, I still spot mini gators I did not know before.
P.s.: "most of the time is it green" will say it is not only green. Could also be red or so.
My remark about it's ambition to run in Switzerland is a little joke Smile.

Just for your pleasure a few pics of "real" mini gators at work in Switzerland.

Beginning of May 2006 in Sierre (Valais):
UserPostedImage

Next two on May 20 in Brig (100 Year Simplon tunnel anniversary, in the background the famous VSOE had just arrived):
UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

As you might see, there are some differences with the various gators, even of a same type; the last one (pictured in summer 2004 in Chur) comes closest to the Märklin model #36330 (upper headlights on body).

The Märklin and TRIX magazines also contain some nice pictures of the prototypical Ee 3/3 loco (road #16370).

Yes, she is a beauty! Got a great deal on her on eBay. She is like new, even the box is like new. I have considered not converting her and leaving her as an analog for my infrequent M-track/analog carpetbahn, but I want her running on my layout so I have to convert her.

No problem on MY layout. All(*) digitals work in analog anyway :-PPP
(*): At least all factory equiped models I know of...

Mine cost 80€ second hand in a shop in Copenhagen. Not the very best price, but good enough for danish prices as they normally go...
Question for you Lutz- Is that little BLS guy a Brawa? How does it run/ is it AC digital? Its looking pretty tempting!

Hi John,

yes! It's the (dark) brown Te 32 (#0573); the predecessor of this one: UserPostedImage

Although it was still supplied with a LoPi-1 Decoder ("BRAWA Premium Digital") the the running characteristics are so far acceptable. f3 allows to activate the shunting gear, f4 to disable the delays. Pulling power is not very high (and doesn't have to be); unfortunately the motor is quite noisy. It has Swiss light changing; the front lights are quite strong which means that you get a driver cabin light for free. biggrin

Unpacking was a little nightmare, especially for the mounting of the spring buffers. Some of my friends bought their model at the same time and were less lucky - defective decoder (ground contact due to missing isolation), broken parts, broken gear, etc at arrival - with the consequence of several warranty claims. So, even I could have sent in my model as well due to the abnormal noise during warranty I didn't as I wasn't sure if I would have gotten anything better.

It's driving; that is most important and it looks very nice in front of one or two service waggons.

Regards,
Lutz

It seems that more than one was saved from the trash bin wink.
