But give boys technical things, and wonders will happen (I hope / I am sure  ). |

Zora: I hae rescued a few abused loks from the trashbin. It can be done because of Marklin's excellent parts support. A little patience and a bit of work and it will be running like new again. |

Hi Zora, The 3001 was my first loco (with red casing), many years ago, and I still love it. Repair of motor and relay should be without problem. It has the SFCM motor, just as the BR 89 (No. 3000), the 3029, and many other older M* locos. Also available from Märklin as spare part. The panthograph, too. Only (cosmetic) problem might be the side rods at the wheels. Loooong out of production. Positive aspect: the casing of your lok is already nicely weathered...  Hans Martin

This model is by my dealer. A delta loc will get a 60760 and this model will get a delta decoder.  |

My first Lok was a BR38 (3099). I quickly swapped that Lok for two E63, and brown one and a green one (both 3001). I still have those loks.  (The paint of the brown Lok is starting to peel[:p].) These are nice little Loks with character.  |

Restoration report 1It is true, the original plan was to throw this locomotive away. The condition of this locomotive was very worse. It was owned by a father, given to his son. His children played with it and partly the neighbourhood also. After about 30 years later it came back to the original owner, that didn't want it anymore. The locomotive was awesome dirty and more black than green. The first pictures of it are of Zora, after she had basically cleaned the outside. It was not my intention to build up this locomotive again. And Theo thought the very same ("impossible"). The motor and relais was badly damaged by a soldering iron, and beyond repair. I was at that moment planning to build a Delta decoder into 3087. But the rebuilding cost were higher than a new 36871. Not surprisingly, a new 36871 was bought. Which left me with a 3087, still with a good motor. If that could fit in this old locomotive... So I started cleaning the frame and the gearing. I also used the current pickup and contact plate of 3087, and builded it in into the electric locomotive. These were in far better condition. I also checked the gauge of the wheels. The last one was a bit too wide. On friday 23 June this combination went to my Märklin dealer. He will build in a 66032 Delta decoder. Zora is saving money for a Mobile Station or a 66045, and knowing her determination she will manage. The pictures so far:   As seen from the pictures, also minor things were repaired. The locomotive body went to Marcel, he will repaint / airbrush the outside. |

Congratulations ! Nice work, and nice to see this old loco running again soon. I agree, using a 66032 decoder is a good solution on an analogic layout. The lok will have an acceleration delay now, i.e. it starts very smoothly when you put power on abruptly. Looks very prototypical, but one must get accustomed to this feature.
There is one very interesting thing about the electric circuit in the 3001. Originally this lok comes with the usual relay to control the direction. But this relay also switches the head lights on and off, according to the chosen direction! This is simply achieved by switching the lamps parallel to the corresponding coils of the field magnet.
I suppose that this somewhat strange electric solution (as it reduces the power of the motor) served a second purpose: it made the motor run slower. Quite reasonalble for a shunting loco.
All this is no issue when you install a delta decode instead. But the lok might be much faster now than the original 3001.

Starting correspondence to obtain a box for the locomotive. It will be from the simular Primex locomotive, but in this way the locomotive can be stored proper. If everything goes well this week, it must come from Ulm by mail. |

This was indeed the engine originally build in. But like the relais, it was heavy damaged by a soldering iron. Since replacing by a original motor is too expensive, I replaced it by a more modern motor. I will add this picture to my documents, it can be helpfull in the future. |

Restoration report 3, by MarcelHere is the body of the locomotive, fresh from the paint shop.  Body, airbrush, Tamiya TS-2 Dark Green. Roof, airbrush, Tamiya TS-17 Gloss Aluminium. Air brake cilinder, painted, Revell enamel paint, 34 red. Footplate and steps, lined with a Edding 3000 black marker. Lamps, lined with Schneider 271 silver paint marker. Much fun to do this restauration job. My great hobby is trucks and airplanes, but it is always fun to do something different. I'm very anxious to see this locomotive completed. Greetings, Marcel. |

Restoration report 4A lot to tell, so a lot to report. Wednesday I recieved a call that the locomotive was finished and a 66032 decoder was build in. The repairman from my Märklin dealer had also a surprise for me. He had an old model pantograph left over, and fitted it to the roof. That looks much more authentic than my solution. I converted a 7207 pantograph to fit. Something to keep in mind, if anybody else is repairing such a locomotive. Also he handed over a bag with little cotter pins. These can be used to repair the railing on the noses of the locomotive. On the 4th of July I've got a message from the post. A package had arrived for me from Germany. It contained a Primex 3002 box, so in future this locomotive can be stored proper. I have made a first test run and I am really exited. Everythings runs smooth. The lights can be turned on and off with the function button on the Delta control 4f. Funny though, because that was impossible in 1957 or so. Now I am waiting from another dealer in Germany, perhaps he has got the windows and steps from this locomotive. The locomotive, so it is now with new motor and updated body.  The new motor and Delta 66032 decoder. A bit of a rare combination. A frame from 1957, a motor from 1976 and a decoder from 2006. Typical Märklin philosophy that it all fits and works, because the technical items spans a period of 49 years.  The locomotive with the Primex 3002 box.  |

It was a difficult decision to get started with model trains. But it makes life really easier when you have such a team of technical men around. My first thought was really to throw the locomotive away, but now I can't wait to see it work.
The locomotive reminds me of a simular one shunting in Bern, Switzerland. Although it was not green, it had also these odd coupling rods. It was always busy shunting the post cars to and from the incoming trains. And a few men travelling with the engine driver, to couple the cars together. Untill then, I always thought that coupling rods where a steam engine feature. |

I will not. But this is too complicated for me. But basic maintainance was already learned to me. If you run on a carpet, special attention is needed to the wheels and gears. All dust and dirt must be removed before the locomotives are returned to their boxes. |

Restoration report 5At last, time to get to the post office. A parcel arrived from Ulrich Sehling that contains the steps for the E63 electric locomotive. He also supplied the windows for the E63. So after breakfast and a cup of coffee hard at work. Although a small detail, the E63 with brand new steps is stunning. But Ulrich should also deliver spare nerves as well, because it is not easy to apply the new steps with those tiny cotter pins. After the steps were builded in, I assembled the E63 and made a test run. I could not resist to smile when I saw that all performed well. It's a good feeling to see that everything is working again. This old lady from 1957 is stunning again! Nice work...
It's fun to see old locos get a new life. I am going to try to restore my first loco that I got 31 years ago on my birthday (tomorrow actually) to it's former glory. Bought a new motor for it and will convert it to digital and probably give it some new paint.
It is an old BR24 from a starter set and my all time favorite. I will try to post som pictures of the work.

The locomotive was handed over to me today. Not to mention I am very happy. I started with one locomotive, and never thought I should own three on a certain moment. This says a lot of the fun you can have with this hobby and I never regret to start with it.  I would like to thank MärCo, my father, Theo and Marcel. For their excellent work. And I promise to handle the locomotive with the upmost care. |
