I am fairly new to MRR and from what I've read on this forum, it seems with ESU MFX decoder, you can download sounds to the decoder's SRAM using the Lokprogrammer, and map it to a function key on your controller.

My questions are:

1) does Marklin MFX decoder (made by ESU) also has some free SRAM on board so we can use Lokprogrammer to download extra sounds to it?

2) if (1) is workable, do you guys think Marklin will update CS to allow the same thing in the future (of course we need Marklin to complete the computer interface first).

Many thanks.

Hi Martin,

looks like you misunderstood one very important part in the functional operation of the Lokprogrammer (and maybe Märklin mfx decoders):

1. You can only download the complete soundfile into the decoder sound SRAM.

2. Since Märklin doesn't (or at least until now hasn't) provided their sound source files, you cannot add sounds to their decoders.

Actually, I doubt that Märklin intends to open access to their sound files; it requires quite some care to ensure proper and successful sound selection and programming, which is the reason why this capability is not yet provided with the CS and why their decoder sound SRAM is usually "blocked" for rewrite.

Regards,
Lutz

The sound files you can download to ESU-based sound decoders are complete "packages" of sounds, ie a binary "blob" of defined sounds. So you cannot download individual sounds for eg the whistle on F1 and so on, but have to compose a customized "package" in the ESU LokProgrammer that you can write to the decoder. Can be quite fun to experiment with though...

Thank you all for your replies. I asked because I think I've read somewhere on this forum someone mentioned they have copied the railway clicking sound on the BigBoy and moved onto another lok. Since I am pretty new, so it's probably I was confused by some of the comments.

Martin,

as I wrote already before, if you don't have the full "source" files (i.e. .wav) of all reqired/desired sounds as well as their composition you will not be able to add a new sound to the decoder. Since the railway clicking sound is provided with other sound decoders too (for example the VT137 retrofit kit), it might be possible that the person who claimed to have done this composed it from an existing (non-Märklin) sound decoder file set; i.e. ESU.

By the way, the name of this file is "rail_clack1_loop.wav" with a duration of 2.08sec. and size of 32k.

Regards,
Lutz
