Last night I was looking at a copy of the 1968 Märklin Catalog (the Christmas I received my Märklin 3148 start set). It brought back so many memories. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then... However, if I back then had had the means ( I was only 8 years old), these are the models that I would've wanted so badly to buy:

3015
3021
3022
3045
3046
3047
3059
3066
3067

Except for 3015 and 3045 (I have lost all hope), I have managed over the years to acquire the rest of my dream list of that time. Most of them in very good art boxes.

How about you??

Best regards,
Armando García

The locos of my childhood dreams were in the catalogues 1975 through '78.

I bought current versions of the locos I couldn't afford then: BR 151, BR 194, BR 110, BR 140, BR 103, BR 01, ...
Well, BR 110 and 140 are no longer current versions ...

A "translation" of your list:
3015 Ce 6/8III Swiss Crocodile
3021 V 200.0
3022 E 94
3045 class 205 (DSB)
3046 class 150 (SNCF)
3047 44
3059 Capitole
3066 class 204 (SNCB)
3067 My1100 (DSB)

Tom

I was born in 1971 but my father started the hobby in 1959.
From my father collection I got:
3000
3005
3011
3015
3016
3037
3046
I have been able to get:
3003
3029
3030
3047
3048

Armando you should not lost your hope on getting a 3015, I have seen a lot of them in perfect condition and good price on ebay. A 3045 is going to be hard to find and pay.

My wish list includes two older ones:
ST800
3025

Eduardo

Tom,

3067 is closer to home for you, it is DSB (Denmark), even if its 87:1 version was built by Nohab in Sweden.

Hi Eduardo, you must for sure remember the store on Calle Unión, in Sabana Grande. Your dad must have been a customer there. At that time I used to get all my Märklin trains from them (at their overpriced rates). But the Bs (VBO) was strong in the 70's. The 3015 sold for Bs500, which seemed a fortune to me in those days (my schoolboy weekly allowance was Bs 5!) That store had a lot of models on display on a glazed shelf, and I would spend hours on end looking at my favorite locomotives. Later, my friend Giorgio Volpi opened a Märklin store in El Junquito, and eventually moved to CCCT-2.

I have tried bidding for 3015 and 3045 on eBay, but have stopped as soon as the price has gotten way over the top.
Best regards,
Armando García

Armando,
I have the 1961-62 catalog in spanish with the prices of that moment. The 3015 was Bs 120 and the 3025 was Bs 130. I think my father bougth his 3015 in Germany in a trip, but the other locos were bought in that shop. I was about 8 or 9 years old when I first visited that shop, and of course I still remember the glazsed shelfs full of trains. The shop is still there (Trenelandia) but all the shelf now have plastic models, no more trains there.
Regards
Eduardo

Hello Armando,

I had a 3015 in 1961 but foolishly sold it four years later. Several years ago I managed to pick up a brown Crocodile (3652) for CDN $200 in a most unlikely place, so nil desperandum. However I still have an itching for a 3015.

cheers,

Mike
Why do grown men play with trains?

But their dreams they won't let down the drain

Hi Armando,
I am not so aware of older Märklin models, so perhaps you can help. I find this topic and similar topics interesting, because I too had childhood dreams.

What are the 3015, and 3045 models?
And why are they now so desired and expensive?

regards
Kimball

Hi Kimball,

The 3045 was a former German class 44 owned by the DSB (Danish State Railways). It is an almost exact replica of the German 3047 (class 44) of those days, albeit for the fact that it had two assymetrical headlights (the Danes seem to like that) and three rings around the smoke stack (representing the Danish red and white national colors). It was only built during two years (I believe; I'll have to check the Koll's catalog), and soon got cult status. I'm sure that some of our Danish members can post a picture of their 3045.

The 3015 was the scale 00 big, sturdy, noisy, lovable crocodile. Two recent replicas with similar contruction are included in the 150 Year anniversary set.
Best regards,
Armando García

I was born in 1949. I like the old ones. I can make them digital with sound, LEDs or anything else within reason. Not only that, I can repair them with very simple parts. I think, maybe, many of the new one are beyond my capabilities. I really don't see what the new ones add to my exerience considering any problem after warrany will cost me $ hundreds.
I still buy 3 or 4 new ones each year but I really don't know why other that marketing and reading the forum.

Hi all
I got my first Loco(3000) for Xmas 1959,I was 7.We had a small table
in the bedroom with a circle and a passing loop.At night the bright
lights of the 3000 would make shadows of the trees and houses on the walls as it made it's way round.
That same Loco was the first to run on the new layout I'm building
at the moment.

Hello Armando,

no, I bought it later, as it did not interest me at that time. As of Christmas evening 1971, I had six locos. They were the BR 23 (3005) from 1960, Netherlands' Bull Eyes Loco 3013 which arrived in 1961 and the V 60 (3064) from 1964.

On Chistmas Eve 1971 three locos found the right way, the V 200 (3021), the BR 38 - P 8 (3098) and the brother of said 3045, the French 3046.

All of my initial locos were delivered by the Christkind, or Santa Claus, which also might explain the irrational fact that a one and a half year old child received a 3005 and same but then 11 1/2 year old got three locos in one day.

A short time later I obtained the 3059 Le Capitole loco and my first self bought one was a 3054 E 03 Loco.

Collecting began later, in the eighties, and I wouldn't have regarded my purchases as collecting then, more as trying to assemble what I had not possessed in the sixties.

Many regards,

Hans

Thankyou Armando and other readers for your explanations, and stories surrounding these models.

Yes I can see how the Danish version is different. A bit like the 4036 coach model in FS colours. It is a 4037 in different colours, and a different roof , but is now quite valuable.

I have now found top prices:
3045 available for about 1,700 Euro, and
3015 Crocodiles about 700 Euros.

regards
Kimball

I had the chance in 1980 to buy the 39....Series (Kit form)
I've purchased 2 x BR 01 (3948, 2 x BR 44 (3947), 2 x SBB Re 4/4 (3914, 1 x E 44 (3911), 2 x E 18 (3924, 1 x 150X (3946),
The number 3915 did'nt raise any eyebrows.
When I found out what the number crocodile) stood for, I was very annoyed with myself.

Hi all,

More pictures here of the holy-grail-like, cult-status 3045:

http://www.bigio.net/Dampf/3045/3045_100.htm

Bigio's site is a wealth of information.

By the way, the assymetrical headlights and tail light (although not working on this model), according to Danish style, can be seen in one of the pictures. This loco also had snow plows.

And this one here for Eduardo:
http://www.bigio.net/Trieb/3025/3025_101.htm

Enjoy!

Armando García

Hi Armando
The 3045 may be difficult to find, but they are around, so it is just a matter of patience.
As for a 3015, I have never visited a Train show where there wasn't at least one for sale!
Maybe you should make a point to visit Eurowest next year in San Francisco...I am sure you'll come back with one!
So keep the faith!

Dan,

Unfortunately, I don't have the box for that particular locomotive (3059), but if I remember well, there was never a special box for it. It came in the same box as the 3058 (in the turquoise livery).
