Anyone know if a Trix Express loco can run on Marklin tracks? I'm not so worried about the actual conversion (or should I be?) but wheel and flange sizes.

Any info appreciated!

The thickness of the wheel flanges makes it impossible. With cars you can maybe change the couplings en wheels.

Don't run DC motors on AC. Trix Express used AC motors until 1953 and DC engines from 1953 onwards.

Also of course the wiring is different. I don't think anything will happen if a Märklin AC analog layout is wired the usual way, annd then a Trix Express engine is put on the rails .... I am not quite sure but I believe that ground is in the middle (pick up shoe) whereas power comes from either left or right. This of course can be modified quite easily !!!

Regards,

Hans
I like M-track and my things that run on it were built between 1959 and 1972.

Converting a Trix Express is very time consuming and most likely more costly in then particularly locomotives. It might be cheaper and better to buy an old second hand Marklin model of same type and convert to digital and high efficiency.

I am converting the 4 Trix locs I have for the experience, but I had to order the wheels a few times because of errors in cross referencing parts from Marklin to Trix

If you place a TRIX Lok on C-track, the Lok will just sit there. Since both rails are ground, no current will flow from left to right. No current, no Lok power.wink

Raise the panto on E-Loks, and you can run the TRIX Lok from the overhead. (Possible to short, be carefull)

Unless you get RP25 wheels, should be no problem running DC wheels on C-track.
Roll the dice for M-track. (Even with AC wheels...[:o)])

Thanks guys - your answers are great as always. Hans, your point about ground being in the middle is right. I now remember that Trix Express uses the centre rail as ground so that they can run 2 trains on the same track, each picking up "live" from a different outer rail.

A clever idea really, being able to run 2 trains (3 with catenary) independently on the same track without any of the electronic gimmicks that we have come to rely on...
