The more I run my trains the closer I get to giving the motors a really good cleaning and lubrication. It seems that the best way of doing this is to disassemble the motor and give it the engine spa treatment.

However, my grasp of what consititutes the motor is very conceptual. Is there a site (in plain English) that anyone knows that explains all the parts and how they interact in language that is very basic? The diagrams that come with the Marklin locos do not provide that type of integrated information. I have little background in understanding electrics and part of the allure of this hobby was that I could get a good "grounding" (bad pun intended, feel sorry for my kids) for a better understanding. From brushes to commutators it is a bit of a mystery.

Hello John,

Sometimes it pays to be a Marklin Insider ( no offence to the Outsiders ).
In the past Marklin Insider magazines there were many write ups with Pictures on all the Marklin Motors.
Have a look here www.stayathome.ch/maerklin_br03.htm

I can think of 2 options:

1) buy a very cheap second hand locomotive and sacrifice them for learning.

2) I have a very nice nephew and father who clean the locomotives for me. Perhaps somebody in your circle who can help you ?
You are never too late to become a Märklin fan.

The Märklin website has some very good exploded drawings of the locomotives, unfortunately the parts are all listed in German.

Nice combo of links thanks all.

And offering a loco or 2 to the inquisitive gods. Hmmmmm. I must say the idea of sacrifice appeals to my pagan Celtic blood. If perhaps I could get one for $20 I may try but that's not happening any time soon.

thanks again.

Just my two cents here. I feel the best way is to try to find some cheap locos in need of repair and or/just for parts on auction. I learned how to fix these trains starting out with the 3000's, 3029's, 3090's and moving up. Once you get the knack for taking them apart and putting them back together, the bigger locos won't be that much harder. The one thing that I had to overcome was the wiring ( being very carful not to break) after totally stripping an engine down. Just practice with them and don't get frustrated if it doesn't work the first time around.
