Hello all,

Last week, I moved my trains around a bit on my layout, and one very small locomotive (the 36861 Glaskasten) moved from a local line to the main tracks.

Now there seems to be a problem: this loco often does not operate the switching rails / circuit track (24994) correctly. It fails to give a switch signal, while the loco shakes abruptly (probably the power feed is interrupted for a short moment). The curved (R1/R2) switch rails seem to give more problems than the straigh ones (but not sure).

The problem might be caused by the very light weight of the loco. But even when I try to look carefully, it is difficult to see what is really going on.

Do others have similar experiences? Suggestions? Would replacing the pickup shoe help? (The spring part might be getting old; I have this loco for about 2 years; I don’t remember if it has worked properly with switching rails before).

(Please excuse me if this question has been asked before; I did not find a similar question in a search).

/rudi

Cleaning the switches always help. Are your switches laying perfectly horizontal?

Rudi: As with all small locos - their schleifer is simply too short ... [B)]

They have the long version. But cleaning the axles will also help.

Hi, thanks for your replies. To answer the question: yes, the switch rails are on a perfectly horizonal surface, so no issue there.

About cleaning the switch: what should one clean exactly? There is little more than two microswitches in the rail, and the movement feels good to me, just like a new switch (it takes almost no power to push the switch). I will take a good look at the axles of the loco.

I though of replacing the pickup shoe (indeed, this model has one of regular length). Maybe the springs have gotten worn out, and the switch lifts the shoe slightly (ie the force to push the switch, however small that is, is more than the force to pull the shoe up).

Thanks, Rudi
