Hi. I have bought a class 101 loco on ebay, #37391. When I received it, I found with surprise that it has the c-sinus motor... even if the code begins with 37 and in 2001 catalog it is described as a normal high-efficiency motor. I thought that someone could have changed the chassis with another unit's one, but everything seems new. Anyway, I'm obviously very happy because the locomotive works very well. But someone can tell me if any models of the 101 were built with c-sinus even if the code begins with 37?
THank you. Bye.

Hi Pietro,
There should be a partnumber written in orange on a sticker attached somewhere on the bottom of your loco. If the first letter of that number is an "S" than it is a C-sine motor or if it's an "H" than it is a high efficiency propulsion. Although this may still not tell you whether it's originally fitted with a C-sine motor, especially if the sticker is on the driveunit. My Koll's catalogue also suggests it should have a high efficiency motor.
Hope this is the information you're looking for.
Best regards Guus |

37391 (THW locomotive) was IMHO never factory built with a C-Sine motor.
The only BR101 ever built with C-Sine was the WM locomotive (39370).
This locomotive seems to have been converted by someone (very popular with models sold through ebay), likely with the body of a 39370.
Looking at the serial prefix may not help much as in most cases the body carrying the label is exchanged together with the motor.
Regards, Lutz

In the 2005 year book there is a loco with a c sine motor with item No 37900 BR 290 which seemed strange to me. Maybe M is abandoning that system of numbering.[:0]

Hi Lutz, That's exactly my thinking, although if the number on the body indicates a certain type of motor and the driveunit has a diferent one from what one would expect,it might confirm that the loco is converted. Well there are many possibilities ofcourse, maybe a picture of the loco would help. Hi Chris, I've noticed that too ,although I get the impression the numbering system has been abandoned with the new C-sine motor and not with the older type. Best regards Guus |

One more point came to my mind. A converted WM locomotive would and should have a year code "0" whereas the one of any THW locomotive would be "1". At least this is also the case with my own two locomotives. Regards, Lutz PS: The numbering scheme for models with the new compact C-Sine motor is and will continue to be different than that of models with the first "evolution" C-Sine. Same difference is true for the new Köf models, which all have a 36xxx model number, but all have high performance decoders with active load regulation. But don't panic - 32xxx numbers are still "reserved" for true platin models.

Here you can see two pictures of the motor. The code begins with "S", as you told. Bye. Edited by moderator 11 January 2011 16:18:04(UTC)

An ebay seller kindly told me that the 33961 steam loc, in the 29530 starter set, is High Performance Digital, dixit Koll! I would have expected a 37xxx number. Don't know why Maerklin enjoy confusing us??? BTW, any comment on this model?

Do a search in this forum, and you'll find a lot of info about it. Loks that come in the startersets or trainset packages don't always have a correspondent in the catalogue, and that is one case. You shouldn't refer to that lok as 33961, since that's not what it is. There's more differences, when comparing that lok with the 3096, 3396, 33961 or any of the other close relatives. Most obvious are the external detailing: the 29530 starterset BR86 lacks handrails, cabin steps, and the red paint in the plastic body. This must have been a cost cutting measure. But, IMHO, you are generally speaking, correct: Märklin does a lot of confusing things, such as the all new BR290, a 37xxx series, that indeed has a C-sine notor, albeit, the new compact style. Luis, Sorry, I was not clear: the loco in the 29530 starterset is in the Koll catalog, number 33961.30 . Thanks for your comments on the loco details! Fred

Sorry for my wrong sending of the pictures. Here you should see them: I don't think the motor has been changed by maerklin or someone else... it seems the whole chassis is another loco's one... Bye Edited by moderator 11 January 2011 16:17:34(UTC)
